welcome to the forum Mike!
interesting idea it sounds like it will work. youmay want to try a simple sample frist and see what it can handel
if that doesnt work try clear casting resin or woodland scenics “real water”
best of luck mike.

Thanks duckman,
I’LL try a sample first , as you have suggested but if it’s to akward to use
I will check out the “real water”…
mike.

You’ll probably have problems with unwanted air-bubbles. I have never tried what you are going to do but have worked with silicone. Tell us if it works though.

I saw a dio of a U-boot in silicon caulk as water, and it looked ok, but I have seen better. It seems just a little too opaque to me. If you were to paint it with some high gloss paint of some kind, that may work, but leaving it like it comes from the tube, it looked milky.

I tryed a scrap piece , it did work out as I wanted it too will have a look at a couple of other products . and see if I can find one that is easy to work with or try the woodland products if I can get it in WEST AUST…[:p]

There are lots of ways to make water, you might want to look up how Train set modelers make their waterscapes, one way is a type of “wavey glass” another way is to use stuff called Realistic Water(found at hobby stores in the trainset section). There is a nice How-To Make Realistic Looking Water in the Model Railroader Magazine the July Issue…
Diorama builders would and should look into the techniques used by model railroad builders, it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY, and has gotten me into yet ANOTHER hobby along the same lines as building dioramas and models…

Liquitex two part resin is a much better water choice. Crystal clear and dries toa very hard surface. Silicone tends to be milky and the surface is relatively soft. Tried it once and was very unhappy with hte results.

I agree , check in the train section of the hobby store. I have seen model railroads that have used the clear water material and it looked very realistic

I have used silicone caulk for water yes, but dont use the clear stuff. I have heard that it isn’t as good as the white caulk. I’ve used the white kind, mine was the type that dried clear. It turned out very nice, but just dont use it for really ig waves, it waont hold its height or shape fresh. then again, u could try buildin it in layers. hmmmmmmm…

BTW(by the way)- welcome!! nice ta meet ya.
