Can anyone give a difinitive answer for the correct paint scheme on Happy Jack’s Go Buggy P-38? I have the decals from Eagle which call for olive drab glare panels but the photos I have show the panels looking flat black. Also, it looks like there is some black/white stripes on the underside with the rest of the aircraft bare metal finish but I have no complete photo reference of the entire underside. Any help appreciated.
In the referance photo that I have, the anti glare panel looks to be a slighty lighter shade than the words “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy”, so I would guess that it is OD. I only have a front quarter shot, so I cann’t say anything definitive about the undersides. The only strips that the profile I have shows are the white one around the nose, and the yellow ones covering the spinner and front engine panel. Both the profile and the picture are from Jerry Scutts and John Stanaway’s book Aces of the Mighty Eighth. Hope this helps!
Hey LSETER,
I’ll see what references I have at the house. I’ll check it out when I get home for ya.
Flaps up, Mike
Am actually in the middle of putting together a bit of info on the 20th FG over on the ETO forums. Will let you know what I come up with, although so far I haven’t found an awful lot concerning Ilfrey’s P-38.
By the way, as some of you may know, Jack Ilfrey is not doing very well at the moment…

I’m not a praying kinda guy but if you are, then by all means please do…
Fade to Black…
I have a book, I think it’s “Thunder in the Heavens” or “Aces Past” one of the two, has a bunch of pictures of happy jacks’ go buggy, a restoration in it’s markings anyhow, they’re great pictures, I think the book’s about ten or fifteen years old so I don’t what the story on the plane is as to whether it still flies or where it is, but the glare panels are black on that plane with invasion stipes on the underside, I’ll double check for other details and report back.
Thanks all, I have a paint scheme in mind now, but would still like to verify if Ilfrey ever flew Happy Jack without the stripes underneath. Would make life easier not to have to mask and paint those.
