So what is the advantage of acrylic resin vs the urethane resin we ordinarily use for casting? Seems like it basically works the same. I know the urethane is supposed to be not that good for you, but unless we chew on our models a lot, I can’t see where that is a problem. I am amazed at the low viscosity and low surface tension of urethane casting resins. They make better detail than metals.

Not sure what you’re point is Don…Did you watch the entire video?

If you see nothing there that this combination of Zap-A-Gap and Dental Acrylic does better than urethane, then I’m not sure we are looking at the same features. How do you get urethane to stick to things better (and without softening plastic) as well as cyanoacrylate.

I guess I’ll have to put you down in the no column.

Hi Paul,

Enjoyed the video and will have to try dental acrylic/thick CA for sculpting. I did watch the entire video but still have a question in re the function of the Bare Metal Foil. Is it just a VERY thin separator to allow molding to accurate contour? And doesn’t the acrylic/CA mixture stick to it as well? i.e. it seemed to me that after your very nice work of ‘flaring’ the canopy that you would end up with acrylic/CA firmly glued to the BMF. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

BTW love your site and am impressed with what you accomplish with the Unimats for modeling. Use my U3 often but haven’t yet reached your skill level.

Thank you. Yes the the Zap-acrylic mix will stick to the BMF, but it scrapes off pretty easily without disturbing the mating surface so it makes a great separator.

Kind of harsh with old Don there huh! I kind of trust his judgment on most things. Maybe you could be a little more cordial to others opinions.

You mean because “old Don” was so cordial. Did you see one cordial word in his comment? In the video, I specifically said that dental resin would not be my first choice for casting, that you should use casting resin. So what was the point of the post, I had already said that in the video. You might want to go back and read Don’s post.

Gotta side with model maker 66. Don is one of the few voices of reason on this forum, and a great model maker to boot, that said,it it a a forum, and all opinions are valid

Thanks for another great video, Paul!

I remember a FSM article years ago, where the author used dental acrylic resin to do the same thing to the rear turret of a B 25 as you did for the B 24. I’ve always wanted to get my hands on some.

I was also eager to watch my dentist as he added the clear resin to my bite guard during the initial fitting. Amazing stuff!
