Gunze or Tamiya Color for a T-72

Hey all, I have just picked up the Tamiya 1/35 T72 M1 and was wondering if anybody here could point me in the right direction as far as paint color goes in either the Tamiya or Gunze range? I plan on using the kit decals and doing the vehicle in either Soviet or DDR service.

TIA

If you are using Tamiya Acrylic, then I think Dark Green is what Tamiya recommends for WWII Soviet Armor. Have you tried Model Master paints? I think MM may have a better match.

Thanks M1Garand but the T72 I’m wanting to model is from the late 70’s early 80’s.

having done a bit of research on the web, it seems that, ironically, Tamiya acrylic NATO Green XF-67 is a pretty good starting point for Soviet post-war armour green. The colour seems to start fading and weathering pretty much as soon as the tank leaves the factory, but fades in a lighter green, with hints of grey, direction, and not in a brownwards or tanwards direction, as Olive Drab does.

This is the sort of colour you’re looking for:

The Model Master Soviet Tank Green (acrylic 4807) isn’t a particularly good match for the post-war colour, being both too dark and too brown, though it’s sort-of OK for the wartime one. My preferred match is either the Xtracolor or (better) the White Ensign Models Colourcoats version. It’s also good if you want to paint your Airfix Anti-Pesto Van, rather than leave it in the bare plastic!

Cheers,

Chris.

Nothing in the Gunze range is good out of bottle match for Soviet Tank Green, but Tamiya’s Olive Green is a good startign point.
