Gray (Grey) Paint

Hi All -

I need help regarding a gray (grey) paint. I bought the Moebius Models “Confederate Raider,” and in the suggested painting list, they recommend his uniform as “Blue Gray.” However, I searched ‘Wikipedia’ for Confederate Uniform Colors, and they listed the uniform color as “Cadet Grey.” This was a very interesting read, and I learned a lot about the uniforms. I’ve been all over the web searching for “Cadet Grey” model paint, but can find no reference to it; nor can I find any sort of mixing chart to mix any paints (enamels or acrylics) to obtain this color.

Can anyone tell me the colors needed (and their ratios) to make up a home brew of “Cadet Grey?” Thank you in advance for your help with this painting project.

It is very difficult finding accurate color info for a subject that old. Even if color photography existed then, the aging of negatives would make the color suspect. Sometimes you can see, in black and white photos, how dark or light a gray is by comparing it to objects whose color appearance you know.

The good thing is, whatever color you decide to go with, others will have a hard time proving you wrong :slight_smile:

You might try to find a civil war re-enactment group in your area. They are pretty knowledgeable about uniforms, and fabrics may hold their color far better than any paint.
