You can use the bristle of old brushes. Or You can buy a big brush, like thouse on hardware stores, it’s cheap. Just cut them at an equal hight and aply them in small bushes to the ground. [:)]
Thanx 4 that I will go and scrounge around in the garage now.
Keep well
If you have some “hemp” type twine (cord/rope?) you can unravel that and use it also.
This may sound strange … but it does work. Do you have access to a horse stable … if so talk to one of the groomers and get some “left overs” from when they brush the horse.
If you use sisal / jute / hemp rope, cut off about an inch of rope, unwind and separate the fibers, then loosely recombine them so that the ends of the fibers are at random lengths. Clamp the bundle in the middle with a hemostat to hold it together, grasp the end of the fibers with one hand and cut off the desired length of grass with scissors. Dip cut end in white glue and plant in random bunches of different sizes. This produces long grass with different blade lengths and orientations, thus avoiding the “planted toothbrush” appearance which is all to common. Paint as desired.
Thanx 4 the help guys.
Sorry Shermanfreak there r no stables anywhere around here.( Its a bit of a residential area),but thanks anyway.
Keep well.
You can dye sawdust various shades to get a good short grass effect. Also, used tea bags make excellent dried leaves for tree branches or groundwork. Good luck and happy modelling!
How do paint the twine? Which ever color I desire.
Painting depends on whether you want the appearance of green, growing grass or yellow, dead grass. For green grass, I airbrush the clumps of grass a dark forest or olive green, similar to the color of the border on this page. After this has dried, I would return to spray the middle to the tip portions a more yellow-green, leaving the base of the clumps in the darker green. Finally, I dry-brush the tips in light yellow for a highlight color. Dead grass is a similar procedure, but start with a yellow-brown color, working to a golden-yellow mid-tone and highlighting in light yellow to almost white. I always paint the grass on my dioramas first, then paint the bare ground, that way any green overspray is covered by the more brownish earth tones and allows for a smooth transition of color.
Hi there
Thanx all u guys for the great tips, they will come in very handy.
