I noted that Eduard is selling hybrid kits with 3D printed parts. Any advice on best glues to use for 3D parts?
For me, Loctite Extra Time Control Super Glue works the best. It’s tacky enough to grab the part, and cures just slow enough so you can nudge the part into its proper position. Make sure the 3D parts are completely cured and not off-gassing before attaching. set them out in the sun or under a uv light to finish the curing if needed.
I stumbled on Bob Smith Industries Cy-no Acrylic glues early in my 3D printing and have used them for many years now. It’s a great jack of all trades type glue.
A bottle like the one linked will last me 2-3 years as long as I’m reasonably good at closing it back up and keeping the lid reasonably clean.
I use Gorilla super glue in the tiny 3 gram tubes to avoid waste seems I was always throwing out half bottles of glue.
It comes down to is the part going to be load bearing or not. If it is not, then simple CA glue will almost always do the trick. However, if it has some weight to it then the bond of CA glue is on the brittle side and will not hold up. As such something like 5 minute epoxy is best.
Another alternative is this stuff
I have yet to find something that this couldn’t stick together. Kids broken glasses, broken ceramics, broken dishes, model parts made of vinyl, metal, plastic, resin, styrene, 3D print….. You name it, I’ve probably tried it.
It bonds really well, although you may need to apply a bit of pressure to the join line. It has a bit of flexibility, but not noticeable in thin applications. This is my go to glue for difficult to glue items. It really seems to be the duct tape of glues.
Gorilla glue with the twist off lid. It works pretty fast, but in my experience has a couple seconds before it’s bonded, compared to almost an instant bond that you’d get with krazy glue or another CA glue. The twist off lid is nice and the container in general doesn’t really get jammed up ever, meaning you can use the same bottle for a year.
After saying all this, I hate using super glue on my models
but i get it. The other thing you could try is Ammo by Mig’s ultra glue. They have a matte version that dries clear. It’s basically slightly more expensive elmers glue, but comes in a nice bottle and is much more forgiving than super glue, but lacks that quick bond.
