A fun build of an oldie. I built this for the knights of the sky group build more pics there.
Hey Mark, she turned out real nice. Great scheme. I really like that zigzag thing goin’on there.
Mark:
Oldie or not, that’s simply a very fine build of one of my favorite biplanes to ever take wing. The scheme is often pictured in profiles, but not often modeled. How did you do the stripes, especially the red ones? And I assume you had to do the bulk of it, the black ones in particular, before adding the cabane struts. I hope people appreciate what a tough job this must have been. And for an “oldie,” the Daimler-Benz engine looks pretty detailed. The excellent rigging job is just icing on the cake. I hope it was fun overall, because it looks like hard work.
Couple of questions: How do you do your wooden props? Truly a good, convincing one there. Also, what did you use for the overall silbergrau paint job? I’ve gotten hooked on MisterKit acrylics for my WW I stuff, especially their silver-gray, but I wonder if there’s another one just as good, as evidenced by your finish (if you say MisterKit, I’ll just feel stupid, but that’s okay. I’m used to it).
Now I’m just going to have to pull out that new 1/32 Roden Pfalz D.III and that pricey Flying Machines Press book on the Pfalz family and get my behind to work. Except I have that 1/48 Helldiver staring at me right now with its box full of aftermarket stuff…wait… There, I threw a blanket over the Helldiver box so it’s out of sight and out of mind (I live in a typical tiny Brooklyn studio, so my typical Brooklyn Futon bed is only four feet from the work bench. Sometimes, the bed becomes part of the workbench).

Nice one Mark [tup]. Beautiful model from the old kit. Thanks for sharing.
Regards, Rick
Thanks guys it was a fun build.
Tom The markings are all decals that come with the Glencoe kit.The wooden prop is Tamiya flat flesh grained with burnt umber and burnt sienna artist’s oils. Then coated with Future. I added coolant lines to the engine using brass rod. The silver grey is my own mixture of Floquil Platinum Mist and CN Grey mixed 50/50.
Decent build of an oldie. I remember doing the Eduard kit with this scheme. I didn’t have the Glencoe decals, so used 52 various decals and solid colour decal film cut in strips to complete the build. I look forward to your Eduard Weekend kit build. It will be even better. Also if your not going OOB;
The Mercedes D.III in the Eduard kit plastic can be dressed up nicely for the Pfalz D.III type.
If you go with the Pfalz D.IIIa configuration the rocker boxes will need a bit of modifying to match the Merc D.IIIa or aü types that were in this airframe. There is more but it will be below the cowling panels.
One small note - Mercedes was owned by Diamler but the Benz company was separate at this time.
Excellent work there, Mark. It looks great!
