Is there any difference between the 1/48 Revell and Glenco Spirit of St. Louis?
The Revell kit just came out last summer, it’s the best one to get
In a word, yes.
The Revell kit is all brand new tooling, while the Glencoe kit is a reissue of the very, very old Lindberg kit. Having built the Glencoe kit i can tell you to spend the couple of extra dollars and buy the excellent Revell kit, from what I’ve read you won’t be disappointed.
Does the Revell kit have the patterned surface of the real aircraft and how would you paint something like that?
From what I’ve read, the machine turned cowling behind the engine is represented by decals.
FSM had a review on it a while back - can’t remember which issue - sorry.
They said it was a very well presented kit and well worth the money.
Why start out with a pig like the old Glenco kit when the Revell will be a much easier build?
R Boulton, I bought the Revell kit when it first came out. It took me awhile to build, but that was only because I had a lot on my plate at that time… Anyway, it’s a great little kit! Well worth the $12 I spent on it. You may need a tiny bit of filler in some places, but the overall fit is pretty good. The metal nose is represented as a decal (or rather multiple decals). They’re good quality and snuggle down nicely. Just make sure you dont get the paint too thick on the cowling as the decals will come up a tiny bit short. I’d say this kit is perfect for beginners because of the low parts count and ease of assembly, but it’s also perfect for the professional because there’s lots of room to spruce this little guy up.
Here’s how mine turned out-
The FSM review of the Revell kit was in the May 2006 issue, Page 56.
I’ve built the Revell kit. Very nicely detailed compared to the Glenco kit, good interior. I recommend it!
Revell absolutely. finally they are catching up… hopefully
