Hey i am just thinking about attempting a Diorama but realy dont know exacly how to start I know i need to build a base and put in fine dirt and stuff, but i dont know exacly how yall do it,as far as folige in trees and srubs, and most imortantly grass i dont have a clue about how to start making grass look “right”. hopefully yall can shed some light on this.
If you only ever buy ONE book… ONE… Buy Shepard Paine’s How to Build Dioramas…;
Run, don’t walk… You can get it right here and it’s a MUST HAVE for every diorama builder…

In the meantime… Look over your kits, decide what era and genre you want. Then start sketching out rough ideas to get the size narrowed down a bit… Move things around, be flexible, decide what you want to do: Show off a model, tell a story, recreate a moment in histrory, whatever…
Then jump back in the questions about how to do some stuff, there’s all kinds of ways to all kinds of things, and just about everyone will help you out along the way…
Hmmmmmmm… is it worth 16$ though???
i was thinking of depicting a german squad walking along a road with a american sgaud ambushing them i dont know how plausible this would be but im not a accuracy freak i just enjoy modeling for relaxation
It’s worth more, in my humble opinion… It’s the bible of diorama-building. Or least at the “Genisis” chapter…
Look at the used ones from 12.47…
I think i will get it but ill shop around at the bookstores first to see if i can get a good deal
G’luck with that…
Ya… I know amazon is usaluly the cheapest but right now i dont have a bunch of $$ to spend im just a kid THAT CANT SPELL!!!
Well, today’s yer lucky day, kid…
I just bought a copy for ya… Figured I could forgo a couple cans of spray paint…
PM me so I can snail-mail it…
[BH]AAhhh… only problem is my parents wont let me give out any personal imfo, just being on here is testing it …I guess i cant blame them… I realy hate to say no to your offer… but rules are rules, [V] I hope you understand im bumed[V]… is there any other way to get this imfo?
Good parents ya got there… Tell your parents to contact me via email (it’s in my profile), then they and I can link up via telephone if they want it sent to a “safe” address like their work or a PO Box or whatever…
Okay, just reading through this a couple things jump out.

Lack of funds. To be honest, this is not a cheap hobby. You do have to spend money. You can scrimp on dirt from the back yard, but it will look out of scale. There are plenty of products to replicate scale shrubbery and grasses, but the effective ones aren’t sheap.
-
Experience. I’m guessing you haven’t built much yet. Let me suggest you hone your basic building and painting skills before jumping into a story.
-
Research. Uh oh, sounds like school. When you have built a few kits, find pictures of simple scenes you’d like to replicate. Keep it simple to begin with.
-
Think about your story. The best dios don’t need you to give a lot of information. A title should be more than enough. Make sure the elements work together. If you depict combat, don’t have a figure standing casually.

About the offer for the book. Show this thread to your parents. Have the book sent to their worksite. That’s a very generous offer that was made. I can understand their concern.
I dont know im not realy comfterble about it… I mean i apperciate your help but… I think i better not …
hope you understand…
No sweat… PMed ya with the ebay site to buy your own, kid…
Lemme guess, your computer’s in your room instead of the living room where I made my daughter keep hers, right?
Tryin’ ta get some Karma goin’ here… Anyone else want it? I don’t need two of 'em…
SHEESH! [banghead]
Very noble of you, Hans–I guess no good deed goes unpunished?! [%-)]
[soapbox]$&%&%^#&@((@!!!!((!)&#^^@!!!
Guys.
Cut the kid some slack. Sure, to our generation, this would look like an older guy helping out a younger guy- no big deal. ( sorry Hans, insert “experienced” if you like) But his parents are vigilant - and who can blame them. My wife works in a Police child abuse unit and there are plenty of creeps out there. Hans, BTW, WE all know you’re a good guy- good Karma for you for offering. BTW, I havent got THAT book…[:-^]
I took no offense and understood completely… as I said to Birdmam, he’s got some good parents there… And the computer is in the household common area? Even better. My daughter couldn’t have one in her bedroom, either… It was in the living room right where I could see what she was doing…[8D]
YES–it IS worth it! I was once in your shoes…would rather spend the money for the model kit, not the book, but trust me, if you are wanting to improve and learn in your modeling skills or even just get a little inspiration for building stuff, buy the book. Once again, it is worth it!
All these modelers are giving you VERY GOOD ADVICE!
