This is the “new-ish” Tamiya kit. I plan to keep it OOB except for the small mod’s I made to the rear view mirror and width indicators. I plan to dio’ it with a PzII, again, Tamiya’s new offering… the same one wbill76 just finished. It/they will be my entries for the AMPS East “Dawn of War” theme award this September.
My plan is to depict significant wear on this vehicle, since it came out in the early thirties, and contrast it with a relatively new and clean PzII…I think a clean tank will reinforce the theme. I envision the truck sitting near the side of a long road, having just stocked the PzII, and place a figure having a cup of coffee watching the tank roll off to war. The dio’ base would be intenionally long to emphasize the scene. I may even try my hand at Rick Lawyers “color modulation” technique I just read about in FSM. I would shadow the PzII in a “dawn” scheme.
Glad to see some other entries for the show theme Steve.
Looking forward to seeing your dio take shape. I’m just finishing up my BA3 for the show theme and then it’s back to my ‘Supergirl’ dio that I hope to have ready for the show.
agentg: So you want this truck too? Manny is building one right now and I think FSM will be feauring it next month. I need to go see the DAK dio’.
Manstein: Thanks. Did you notice the marks on the interior too?! Sheesh!
wbill76: I may go with the white and yellow like I originally planned, thanks!
panzerguy: I expect there will be a few other theme entries. Is it the same judging process, or is it more like IPMS for that award? How would a dio’ be judged against a single kit?
Sir D/wing_nut: I’m always up to something. I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to start the Tiger Mid or go for this build. I got both the truck and PzII for 1/2 retail…so I decided the Tiger will be next!
Thanks for the comment on the color. I’m concerned that I made it too light, but based on the wear I plan to depict and the fact that weathering darkens things, I should be OK.
Guys: Here’s what she looks like as of last night:
I used a lot of thin washes to get her to this point. The first two were raw umber only, coating the whole vehicle. The next several washes were local…with raw umber again, in areas where I expected dirt to accumulate and eventually “stain” the paint. I then mixed black with raw umber and hit areas where grease would collect with the dirt. The last washes were with burnt umber and black, focusing on areas where rust might start developing. I’m happy with the look so far.
I decided to go for a “tired” looking vehicle versus “beat up”. This truck came out in 1932 so at the beginning of the War it would have been 7 years old. Enough time for worn and bleached paint to occur, some scratches and rust. She won’t be a rust bucket, but I do want to add some where it would be appropriate.
Here is the undercarriage. You’ll never see all the hard work when it’s in the dio’…but I know it’s there…I like how this came out too.
