German tank in north africa

did they use zimm or only in eruope?

The germans were pretty much done in North Africa by the time Zimmerit was introduced

I believe that the actions in North Africa ended before zimmerit started to be applied, which I believe started in 1943.

no doubt, you have been to this great photo loaded site:

http://www.afrikakorps.org/

The final collapse of Axis forces in N Africa was May '43.

Even before May '43, heavy equipment and reinforcements had ceased to be shipped to the “losing cause” of Tunisia.

Zimmerit was applied to all tanks and closed-top self-propelled guns produced from about August 1943 to September 1944.

Regarding www.afrikakorps.org, there are nice photos. However, some of the research there seems fantastical so just read with a skewed eye.

I glad somebody else made this post as I’ve had a note to myself to ask a similar question. But mine concerns Panther tanks, and the “G Model” to be exact. I’ve seen some (more than a few) of Panther G’s with zimmeirt, but lately I’ve also run accross a flood without Zimmerit. Specially late G’s. Now I’ve got four G kits (two are late by Tamayia and the others are DML). When I build these should I just leave off the Zimmerit on the late G’s for sure? Or maybe do one of each with Zimmerit? (I have after market Zimmerit from Cavalier and Eduard)

I’m not by my library but T Jentz in his “Panther: Quest for Combat Supremacy” has a listing of external mods made to the Panther G during its production life. With that, you see that zimmerit was discontinued during the life of Panther production (like the Tiger II). Therefore, “earlies” would have zimm while later ones wouldn’t.

To me, it’s one of the ultimate Panther books. Try to grab it.

The list is similar to this one published about the Tiger I
