German & gas mask color ???

I’ve always used the same color [ Tam# xf-63 ] for the helmuts & gas mask tube holder ,that I use for the whole uniform ,[ when ftaigues are being used other than camo ].But while looking close on back of box,The helmet & g.m. look noticably darker kinda like the gray, but with green added. Am I just turning color blind or just plain “losing it in general” ???any help will be appreciated. Thanks, rudedog

I don’t think so.

The color you are describing sounds like it could be the Testors color “Rubber” or an RLM color such as RLM-74 Graugrun, or Gray-Green.

These both can be got from either Testors on-line, or I just go to my LHS.

In building Tamiya’s (like Revell-Germany’s) aircraft kits, I find them both abysmally deficiant and unnecessarily complicated in the color call-out department, because if Tamiya doesn’t make the color (like Testors does), they will lead you down a not-so-merry chase of mixing and ratioing something from their own limited line to approximate what I can easily get directly under the Testors or the Model Masters label! Thanks T,but I am still crious if there some truth as to hemuts being a darker shade.I’ll check site I stumbled onto. It’s address Is on the leading page of Armor that I posted a couple days ago.Well, thank again, rudedog

Welll, actually they can be a darker shade because not all field uniform equipment was issued at the same time, and you can have a soldier in a worn/faded uniform with a new helmet (hence fresher, darker paint), etc.

In fact in reality, if you study enough WWII photographs, you willl find it was SELDOM like they tend to show in the nice color illustrations where everything is like it “should” be, where you have the typically shown contradiction of seasoned crack troops that suddenly are fielded with nice all-new uniforms and equipment in the middle of an on-going majopr engagement, with not even a spot of mud or dirt on them. There is a modeler who posted placed human maintenance figures for his naval aircraft on this website, who are shown man-handling the aircraft on a carrier deck with perfectly bright clean fingers! [%-)]

Even when I do pilot figures, I generally seek to use different shades for the jacket vs. the pants, etc., especially for 1/32 or larger.
