Hey all. I just watched an excellent documentary of a restoration of a German elephant tank on the Military channel. It is only one of two left. The restoration was done by and for the U.S. Army Ordinance Museum in 2009. The tank was badly damaged by a shell from an American Sherman in Italy, 1944. Anyway it shows the complete build including all parts being cleaned, repaired and application of camouflage. Lots of great history and info. It was shown here at 7:00 p.m. EST. It shows again at 2:00 a.m. EST Check it out if your interested.
yes it was a good show,I got to see it in person a couple of years ago in person, but I didn’t take a picture of it,only in the background of this Firefly
I saw this Elephant after it had been restored…beautiful work! Too bad so many of Aberdeen’s tanks are in terrible disrepair. They seem to be making an effort to nicely restore a couple at a time. With the move of most of the tanks to Fort Lee, VA, maybe they’ll make some progress on some of the others.
Anyway. Says it was hit by a sherman but not necessarily. This Elephant is rather unique in the West because it served in the battle of Kursk. It survived the battle and was upgraded with a bow gun, a feature found necessary from lessons learned at Kursk. Then it went to Italy. Truly an historic vehicle!
Can’t say I’ve heard any stories about them in Italy, except that it was ill-suited to the theatre, because of the mountainous terrain. The long barreled 88mmm L/71 was better suited to the openness of the steppes, where they could safely pick off Russian armor from great distances without fear of getting hit in return. I imagine it was a tactical error to send them west.
Still working on the KV-2. The KV-2 is a great kit! Can’t wait to finish and move on to the M4A4 75mm Sherman. Some crazy guy has been working on a Sherman and is passing on good advice! I wonder who? I dunno. LOL
