Geriatric build of the 1/72 Hasegawa F-106A

This one was started around 1990 and was well along when I dropped it and chipped the tail. I became depressed. I set it aside for later. December 2024 is later enough, I guess. :snail:

This is the state it languished in all those years, with the exception that the tail has just been repaired using Aves Epoxysculpt. I cut more of the fin off and cut a notch crossing the separation line to add strength.
Quite proud of my ingenuity, but later that night I asked myself, why didn’t I just cut the top of the fin off one of the 6 other Hasegawa F-106 kits in the stash. We are always overthinking the problem!

A closer view of the magnificent repair:

The air data probes on the fin were replaced with music wire. The canopy fit is not important as it will be posed open. The sealant decals came out well, I think. The ALPS prints on a continuous film, so I made cuts around the outside and inside and removed the clear film when it released after being wet. I lost the first decal learning how to do it but I always print extras and the next two attempts went well. Flooding the application area with water made the difference. A cotton bud was carefully used to get rid of the excess water and Micro Sol was then dropped on. The narrow decal is easy to displace. Once the Micro Sol had expired I dipped the canopy in Future, which of course was the second time the canopy had gotten that treatment.

Way to pick it up and get going again, John!

Looks like this one is going to be in California Air Guard colors, the Hasegawa decals for my intended scheme were not up to the task. This is my favorite scheme anyway as I used to see them flying in and out of Fresno a lot.

And now it is, courtesy of a combination of Superscale, Hasegawa, and ALPS printed decals.

Great start on the old bird John. Built a few of those in the 80’s

Looks good, John! The decals came out great! And a nice save on the stabilizer, as you’ve got 6 more “complete” kits to do. :grinning:

Gary

Gary, now that Meng is doing the 102 and 106 I probably won’t be doing those other kits, but they were a source of a few parts to finish up this one.

So after a 30 year rest this one is ready for the display case.

I’ll never do an open missile bay on one of these again, what a pain! The last two pictures are of my Convair delta connection to date. You might wonder about the Bear facing backwards. Yeah, a goof, I was going to fix it but then I thought “why not dedicate this one to John (Keavdog) and Carlos (stikpusher)” who headed out from California recently as well.

What stage it was in all those years, except the current repair to the fin in dark resin:
