I finished my Accurate Miniatures build of the TBM-1C Avenger flown by bush in 1944 off of the USS San Jacinto. It is basically out of the box although I had to modify the tail decals to match photos of the actual plane. I will be doing a more accurate deck once I find out the correct color for the deck of San Jacinto. I will also add the Tamiya Tow Tug and some figures to complete it.
Great job there! Really nice work on the double colour demarcation lines.
Funny I bought the ealier kit years ago and went looking for a set of aftermarket decals for the president’s plane then Accurate came out with this kit with the decals in the box. I guess I’ll have to pick up this kit too and do another Avenger now…
Paints for the 3 color Navy camouflage are simple, all Testors Model Master enamels, Dark sea blue upper surfaces, Intermediate blue sides and white underside. I used Future before decaling and a sludge wash of medium gray Tempra paint to pop out the panel lines. The kit decals are not that good, the insignia is about 30% too big for the Avenger in this scheme. I replaced all insignia with left over P-47 decals that looked to be the correct size. And the X-2 decal in the kit did not match the only photo i have found of this aircraft.
Ok thats what I thought the top color was. Im going to start the tri color Avenger shortly and just wanted to make sure. I got a set of techmod decals for my Avenger.
pzl66, Don’t do it!..you’ll regret this later (see my “Techmod Trap” post in decaling). AM Avengers are to expensive to destroy. Just looking out for ya bro…
Really nice work on the model. I’m not sure who’s right, but the TBM at the Bush museum shows slightly different markings. The X2 on the tail is different, the colors are softer edged, and the name “Barbara II” is on the left side only. Here’s a picture:
That is a restored TBM and it is not in the correct color shade. They also had a sharper edge rather than a soft edge. So far from what I see the model is more accurate.
Sorry, let me correct that, I shouldn’t have worded it as “who’s right” because that’s not correct. The plane in the museum seems to be the one he remembers best. The actual plane he was shot down in was X3, not X2, and the X2 markings that the kit has were used after he returned to the San Jacinto, and before they rotated out (a fairly short time). Also, according to most sources, the name “Barbara” was never actually painted on any of the aircraft since the unit commander forbid that. He called them that, but it wasn’t actually on the plane.
The real point here though is that this model is very nicely done!

I read your posts about techmod decals and I found something that was causing a major problem you are having with them. Now I never use any decal set on any decals I use, and anything other than water with techmod is a bug no-no. Water only with techmod and a tip I use to help move the decal (and you can only move them so much so being a close to spot on the better as they are very thin) is I use soapy water on the spot Im about to place the decal. Learned this from a friend of mine who tints windows, and he deals with film that is very very sticky so the soapy water solution is what helps place and set the decal. Once in place use a qtip and roll from the center out gently to get excess water out from under. Again do not use any solvent on techmod decals. Hope this helps.
