Fw190 D-9 of Hans Dortenmann

OK folks, I am officially calling this one done. Stick a fork in it! This the Eduard D-9 Profipak built for mustang’s Butcher Bird Group Build. For anyone looking for some inspiration in doing a 190, I highly recommend checking that GB out ,some most excellent work going on in there!! The Eduard kit has no shortage of problems and these problems don’t seem to be isolated to one or two kits but the majority of them, but I don’t have to tell any of you building them here that. I do love the amount of detail in this kit, but the open panels are a real turn off if you are wanting to zip it up. So without further ado, and please forgive the really crappy pictures as my camera sucks, I present you all my rendition of Hans Dortenmann’s Black 1.

Grr, that last pic wont show the edited one which is kind of annoying. I was really going to tear into the new Eduard Spit next but for some reason the DML 32nd 109 E-4 keeps grabbing my attention so I may have to pull it out! Thanks for taking a peek and as always, your thoughts are welcomed!!

Eric,

Very nice 190! It sure doesn’t look like you had any problems with the kit - it looks awesome! Great camo and weathering.

Steve

Dayum. That’s a winner dude. What a beautiful model!

Gary

That’s a great looking bird! I always have a hard time doing the spirals on the spinners. That’s a really nice paint job too!! Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks a bunch Steve and Gary!! I usually have problems with those spirals also scorpr but the kit decals laid down nice and smooth after a couple of soaks in Solvaset.

That looks awesome! For those of us who are thinking of getting the kit, what kind or problems should we expect?

Thanks VT!! Well in the group build, most people that were building any of the Eduard 190’s experienced some warping to some degree somewhere on the kit. On my particular kit, it was the rear of the fuselage that curved as can be seen in this pic.

This was fixed by heating a pot of water to just before a boil and dipping the rear of the fuse in the water for a few seconds. As soon as I pulled it out I began applying pressure in the opposite direction and it straightened itself out fairly well. Others have report some warping in the wings but in my kit there was none.

The only other points I would convey would be closing the MG panels at the wing roots takes a bit of work. You have to do a bit of sanding on the covers to get them flush on the side of the fuse and you have to remove some plastic in the wing. As with most kits that are designed to be displayed open, closing them up can be a problem.

The centerline fuel tank mount is basically devoid of any detail or attachment points for the fuel tank. I ended up scratch building some detail and pinning it with some stiff wire.

And in closing, I personally thought the landing gear attachment points were very weak and a bit challenging to get set at the proper angles. When I attached mine and thought they were set right, I ended up with some significant toe-in on the wheels and had to break out a hair dryer to get them aligned properly.

But even with all of that, it was still an enjoyable kit to build and the detail is great. It has the perfect amount of surface detail in the panel lines and rivets and the only other thing I can think that needs to be added to the box is some am exhaust as the kit ones arent hollow.

Eric,

that is a beautiful looking bird! Stunning. Im having issues with my own spinner spiral, but I figure thats what silver paint chippingis for, lol.

Fantastic job on the model. I really like the painting and panel lines. How do you make all the panel lines look so crisp and clean ?

Thanks Andrew!! The first spinner spirals I ever did were on my Hs129 and didn’t quite go down smooth. I have to tip my hat to Eduard on the kit spirals as they laid down perfectly!!

cnq- Thanks!! For my panel lines, I use a custom mixed wash consisting of water-based black India ink from Hobby Lobby mixed with water and few drops of dish soap. It is truly a fool proof mixture that will go on smooth as silk as long as you have a decent gloss finish underneath it.

Beautiful build Jester, love the choice of markings.

Thanks Vance!!
