Fw190 A-8/R2 "Yellow 8"

I finished this up in the fall of 2013 and have recently updated the photos to reflect the recently acquired knowlege of how to operate my camera. I’ll have to say that despite the severe warpage issues I had with the wings and fuselage, this Eduard kit was a joy to build. Depicted here is “Yellow 8” of II JG 4 in September of 1944. It was piloted by Friedrich-Karl Frank and was shot down 11 Sept 1944 in a fierce air battle over the Ore Mountains. Frank managed to bail out and the plane became a “lawn dart”. Pieces of the plane were dug out of the ground fairly recently and some managed to find their way into the Royal Class Fw190 A-8/ R2 kit from Eduard which is what this kit is.

Thanks everybody. As far as the piece of Yellow 8 in the kit, its a fact alright. Its part of the reason for the almost 170 dollar price tag on the kit when I bought it in 2007. Being a Royal Class kit it came with the usual two of everything. Two kits, two sets of just about every PE set that Eduard had to offer for it back then, two decal sheets, an Iron Cross with Oak Leaves award and then a piece of the plane dug out of the ground with a certificate of authenticity along with little brief history booklet on the air battle. See the first few pages of the Fw190 Butcher Bird Group Build for the layout pictures I took of it before I started.

The whole problem I had with this kit was one of my own making. I left all of my stash in the garage for 6 years in south Texas heat. Oh well it wasn’t nothing a little boiling water wouldn’t fix.

As far as how this kit all started. Here’s the overall layout of the kit. The first pic shows both kits, the PE goodies and the Iron Cross award. The second displays the piece of Yellow 8 that I was talking about earlier with a brief story about what happened on Sept 11, 1944.

I was looking over the pics that I posted and they were at a time when I didn’t know how to operate my camera too well. I replaced all those really dark pics with some refreshed new photos that I lightened a shade or two. These bring out the details a little better than the original ones…
