FW 190 D-9 Complete

This my friends is why we need to cap that Air Brush whenever it’s not in use. I don’t know why I picked up this good habit but I did, every time I lay it down I put the cap back on. this drop would have cost me a new needle if not a tip as well.

Can’t see it well because I can’t take a picture worth a damn but there’s a big ol’ scrap mark on the head of the cap.

Did this for a GB at Swanny’s.
This is completely OOB and painted to instructions. So if any rivits are missing take it up with Hasegawa. I did not do a lot of detailed research on the A/C prior to building, if you have any info please feel free to share.

First things first. No antenna wire because at some point during the build the mast on the tail broke and i didn’t discover it till today when I started to look at how to string the antenna. Too late to fix it in my book. Second I am not happy with the way the leading edge turned out. I want a more crisp demark between upper and lower, this scheme should have had it, I should have paid closer attention. Now the self critisim is done please feel free to add to it, the critism that is, its the only way to learn.

The Panel wash is not showing up well, maybe I need to get some outside shots but it’s starting to rain here, we need rain. I used several different colors for the wash, dark on the lighter colored surfaces and lighter on the darker surfaces. I think I should have found a happy medium between all the lines. The pictures do not do justice to the panel lines though, especially on that access panel on the tail surface, it really pops out.

Here you can see the only none kit part I added, the screen on the turbo intake, I don’t really know if there was one or not but seems to be reasonable that there was one. So i did one. so there…

I don’t know if chipping the prop is accurate or not, I read that some of these props were made of wood towards the end of the war but I think this A/C was early model because of the canopy.

But I keep it to a minimum with the chiping and left the spinner shinny, I figured they would have kept the spinner nice and polished. besides I’ve not much luck with spinners in the past and this one turned out OK.

Bottom view, you can really see the pumping up in the open gear well. The blowback from the ejection ports and cannons are much darker than what shows up here. I used flash here to see down in the well, maybe that’s what washing out the detail.

I attempted to make it look like these access panels have been used a good bit with wear on the bottom where they would be opened and someone leaning/reaching in. The hinges got a working over as well, again they don’t show up well here though.

I just like this view, I don’t know why…

Overall i’m happy with it but I know it could be done better, when I do another FW it will be tricked out with AM parts, think I want to do one of those Luft bombers.

Great job, Moon Puppy! The red on the bottom looks great![:)][tup]

Considering you followed the destructions it’s a good repsentation of the old “red 1” JV44. 1/32? I built this scheme in 1/72 just to have it. That spinner looks great. The cockpit look good too, if I could paint insterment panels like that I wouldn’t need the PE sets. All in all I’d say you did a great job with that. FYI This was a very late D-9 and you guess is right the props were wood. I’m building 1/32 “red 4” from JV44 right now and have to make a yellow band on the spinner, how did you do yours? Yes for some reason I can paint spirals on but not bands.

Excellent work! Love those red bottomed Doras, just something about them. Thanks for sharing the pics! [tup]

Stan,

So the instructions are wrong? That would explain why I couldn’t find any real photos of “White One”, I did see this A/C as Red One. Pretty sure it’s the same A/C because the “name” or slogan on the side. Why did they do this as White One instead of Red One?

The spinner is the first one I had that came out OK. I attempted to spray white then mask the line and spray red but I couldn’t work the curvature of the spinner correctly. So I did Red, then White, several layers of White. Then a coat of future. The nice thing about this spinner is you can assemble it without the props being in place so no complex masking to fail. Don’t get the tape messure out to check my band it’s not 100%, but close enough for the MarkI eyeball.

What Kit are you doing? The way I read the instructions is this was one of the earlier A/C. Maybe I read it wrong.

glad to know about the props, I can paint over the chiping.

And thanks for the kind words, the IP, remember, I posted the BEST picture.[8D]

Looks good Moon Puppy. Thanks for sharing.

Regards, Rick

Man you ain’t kiddin’ when you say destructions, more like misinformation. I just read where this A/C was piloted by Wubke and was “Red 3”. Reading Galland’s Doras and I find NOTHING about a “White 1”. Well just goes to show you, do your homework.

Way back when before good info and pics were all over a book did an illustrations of alot of lufty aircraft from eye witness accounts. In the 70’s it was best they had. As you can see memory fades with time. That’s was what came up with. You already noticed they mixed up red 1 and red 3. The original description did say the number could be red, but the pic provided was white (one said red the other white). The unit symbol is also incorrect. It is cool looking and a real eye catcher even if most of it is fictious that’s why I built it.

Red 13 is a early 200 block D-9. Red 1 is a very late war 600 block D-9. The primany external differences being the 3 or 5 piece gun hood, universal spinner, and canopy (canopy could be field replaced). Only a person who really knew the aircraft could tell you the differences, there small.

i’m doing the D-11 from JV44 (red 4). I started with a hasegawa new tooled 1/32 fw190D-9 and a large bag of resin parts. I am also adding a Aries master cockpit, quickboost exhaust, interior/exterior PE and alot of scrachbuilding. in the end it will be about 50% resin. I did not use the resin fueslage, choosing instead to go with the plastic D-9 and make all the changes myself. Had I used the resin fuselage it would have been about 70% resin. Pics can be founds in the FW190 gruop build.

Actually “Red 1” had this on the side of the fuselage: “Verkaaft’s mei Gwand 'I foahr in Himmel” (“Sell my clothes, I’m going to heaven!”)

I believe “Red 3” had the fuselage art you have in yours: “Im Auftrage der Reichsbahn,”(“By Order of the State Railway”)

Kit decal sheets/instructions are notorious for being incorrect, but it’s great looking model regardless!

Thanks for the kind words, next Luft A/C I do I’ll run it by you guys first! [oops]

you’re correct about the A/C # and slogans Luftwaffle, I"m reading Gallard’s Doras right now, after the fact…

Nice! She is one pretty -190, Puppy! I really have to appreciate your sharing! Thanks for sharing!

Nice work. Love the scheme

With a different background your model would look dang real!

Beautiful work on that 190. I have always like that one with the red bottom.
