Here’s my scratchbuilt version of the Army’s Future Main Battle Tank (FMBT)

Nice, what scale is it and what did you use as a base?
Cool. Awefully big gun for so small a turret though. Not many rounds could be carried, but I like the lines of the vehicle. Did the Merkava inspire you?
Very cool. What are the features?
One the features would apparently be some sort of innovative, yet seemingly hidden sensor system to allow the driver to see where he’s going[:D]
Seriously MBT, lack of driver vison notwithstanding, that’s some slick building there.
It has an autoloader and there’s no need for a gunner cause the commander just chooses the target from a screen and the tank moves the turret and fire automaticly. So there’s a lot of room for rouds.
Well, at least that’d be cool. [:o)]
Nice work. Other than your imagination, what materials did you use?
Very cool! Isn’t thisthe one thats gonna have a 2 man crew?
wow … nice … replacing m1s ???
They remember me of tanks in video games. not sure which tho ive played so many lol
Looks very good ![]()
Looks good! It’s got a low profile design…
Nice work, especially on the many compound curves. [8D][bow][bow][8-] The lines and overall look remind me of some of the Macross stuff. Where did the inspiration/ideas come from?
nice job of scratchbuilding… sell the idea to the army now.
Theres alot of posts with things like
“Did the Merkava inspire you?”
“Other than your imagination, what materials did you use?”
Its a real tank, i saw it on the discovery channel the other day, its ment to weigh 40 tons so it air transportable and has stealth bits on it
looks great what scale is it and whats the running gear from?
Greta work!! The new russian tank (chiorny oriol) looks exactly like that also. No crew in the turret only ammo and an autoloader.
Wow, that is awesome! interesting the way MBT"s are going, since the threat of massive cold war heavy tank duels is gone.
Very nice work!
Like the Cap’n, I saw something similar to this on Discovery. Except on that show it was more angular and “stealthy.”
Very cool man! Maybe they’ll take it as part of their “Future Warrior” Program!
Steelsnail and Rebelreenactor are right about the autoloader, remote control and displays and 2-man crew. There is a lot of Merkava influence in the overall layout for crew surviviability, too.
This was built in 1-16 scale on the tracks of a British Chieftain, turned around so the sprockets are in front and with the opposite idler wheel removed. I fabricated with sheet styrene and tubing after working out the template with paper card stock.
Following an interview I had with LTG Harmeyer when he was Chief of Armor, I built the model based on his vision of a future tank at the time (about 1999). It has a long-recoil 150 mm gun and a Vulcan cannon in an unmanned turret. The coaxial gun is a .50 cal. In the rear are vertical-launch AT and AA missile racks. Everything is controlled by panel displays in the TC/Gunners hatch in the front hull beside the driver. Both crewmwn have redundant controls for weapons or driving, but the gunner’s are more sophisticated. All weapons are autoloading, so the turret is lower and so is the hull, with extremely sloped Chobham armor to deflect hits. The engine is in front, as with Merkava, for crew protection and to leave more room for turret machinery in back. The real tank would weigh about 40 tons
And ABARNE is right … I meant to add vision blocks on the hatches and it slipped right past me … HA!
Very impressive design and execution, that’s for sure. Thanks for the look.
I’m going to log in tonight from home just to see this (it’s free-webhosted, so I am blocked to the image from work).
Won’t the next generation of tanks be robots, basically – controlled from a long distance from some kind of hardened command center? Sort of a Predator drone with tracks.
