Future Fw190 F8 Project

Morning all!

As I was going through my stash, I came across a Tamiya 1:48 Fw190 F8 kit. Having not built a Luftwaffe bird in some time, figured that this kit should make its way nearer to the top of the stash pile.

As I often do with kits that will be built up in the near future, I make a preliminary decision regarding the color scheme as well as beginning general research on the subject.

For the color scheme, I decided on painting up the bird in the tropical scheme that was used for planes of II Gruppe, SG4, stationed in northern Italy. That bit was simple enough. The part that is giving me the most difficulty is trying to figure out what, if any, significance there is to the color of the numbers on the side of the plane. The example on the paint guide that came with the kit lists this version of the plane as Black 10, II Gruppe, SG 4.

I’m just wondering if there is some significance to colors of these numbers. I would also be interested if anyone has some links to resources related to this particular plane/unit.

Happy Modeling!

Hi there,

If I understand things correctly, the colour of the number depicts what staffel the plane belonged to in that Gruppe. White = 1, Black = 2, Yellow = 3

So in your example, black 10 would indicate it is part of the second staffel of II Gruppe.

There are folks here with far more knowledge than I regarding LW birds so if I’m wrong I’m sure we’ll both find out!

Allen is spot on, it can get complicated as other colours are sometimes seen, including Green and Red.

I have found this site rather useful. This link is for the page on SG 4, but there is a lot of other info on the site.

And you might want to check out the Fw 190 GB. Theres been 1 190 from SG 4 in the same scheme your doing, and there’s a lot of knowledge in there about 190’s.
