Now that is interesting that the future becomes much “harder” with time, I would not have guessed it.
Thanx for the info on the Alclad issue, I will maybe just use a little future as a setting solution for the decals and leave the Micro sol.
How do you guys seal the decals on high shine Pollished allu Alclad? Will future or something similar “dull” it down or do you basically just leave any further sealing off?
I am doing a 1/72 P-47 (Academy) as a testbed for the pollished allu ,although they were in all likelyhood never that shiny to begin with anyway , it might just look cool LOL!
ON my 1/48 Hobbyboss Mirage 3c I need a very shiny pollished look to it though.
I have sometimes gotten some clouding of the Future finish, when applying Micro-Sol, which I chalked up to not waiting long enough for the acrylic to cure. I usually wait 24 hours, but depending on the temperature and humidity–my bench is in my basement–it can take longer.
I also noticed that the clouding goes away as the Micro-Sol does its work and cures.
First off, I NEVER use Future anymore. I have had issues in the past exactly like what you describe. I use only clear laquer. You can use it over any type of paint as long as you let the paint set well before overcoating. i have been building models for years now like this without issue. I have found that Microsol and Microset do not react with laquer, but they will with Future. You asked about Alclad. Be careful, some of the ‘hotter’ solvents will stain Alclad. Be sure to trim your decals as close as possible, flood the area with water and float on the decal.Wick away the excess and lightly rub out the pockets under the decal. After it sets, I may go back with Solva-set if it isn’t settling, but I do not use any decal solvent unless I have to. Works for me and I have plenty of medals and trophys to prove it. The best trick to getting decals on good is a smooth finish and a nice, shiny coat of clear (laquer).
You need to use both MicroSetand MicroSol over a gloss finish in order to get the best results… Microset Solution is for what it’s name implies, setting the decal, and works as a wetting agent and the Microsol is used to get it to soften and conform to the surface…
Personally, I just use white vinegar cut by about 25% for setting solution (which is basically what MicroSet is made of, as well as Testor’s Decal Set, and other setting solutions)… Once the decal is on and in place (set), use the MicroSol…
