In a painting guide for a model that I am about to start, 2 paint colours are referred to, namely FS35550 (which is a light blue underside colour of russian aircraft during WW2) and FS36270 (which is described as light gray). I’ve seen a few cross-reference tables, and they all seem to recommend mixing the colours from other paints. I am hesitant to do this, since I have no experience with mixing paints. My question is, do any of these two paint numbers exist out there in a sinlge paint tin, so that I don’t have to mix them? Particularly the russian underside blue, since I will need it on some other models I have in my stash.
ModelMaster offers a Russian Underside Blue, but it’s too bright for my taste. I usually use a late Luftwaffe color, RLM 78, which is close enough for me.
I suppose I forgot to add an extra complication - here in South Africa we only get Humbrol or Tamiya lines of paint, to find anything else would be very problematic (unless I order something from overseas). [:)]
FS numbers are the US Federal Standard numbers for identifying paint, not Russian. The US government uses it so that everything they paint will be the appropriate same color. I doubt that the Russian government ever adhered to our standard.
I know that FS is a US standard, and I agree with you, the Russians certainly did not use it.
Let me rephrase the question then. [:)]
Is there a single tin of paint out there (preferrably by Humbrol or Tamiya) that represents WW2 Russian Underside blue (or a close alternative), so that I don’t have to mix paint to get the colour?
We’ve got the WW2 Russian aircraft colours accurately matched and available in our Colourcoats enamels. We have no minimum order on paints, and we ship worldwide (including to our regular customers in South Africa).
HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL. John, thanks for chiming in! Its nice to know we have some “high power” people on our forum.Hope you get in more forums. MERRY CHRISTMASS
