Quick question: is there an FS number for the olive drab used on iron bombs during the Viet Nam war? My instructions just say, “olive drab,” but when I went to the hobby shop to buy the paint, I saw at least three different shades of OD.
If there’s not an official FS number for the correct shade, what do you folks use? I’m looking specifically in the Testors MM Acryl line.
I always use FS-34087 to paint my bombs. To show ageing, just add two drops of white to lighten it up just a little. This will give you that faded look that bombs have from being stored in the open weather. Just remember the tail fin assy was added later, some times just before loading on the aircraft, so it will look like new.
The Mk 82 and 83s that I’ve worked on have varied quite a bit in colour. Any fairly ‘yellow’ olive should be about right (as distinct from some of the greyish olive drabs). Tails tended to be closer to FS 34079 dark green. Certainly they looked quite distinctly darker than the bomb body, not just a newer version of the same colour, but a completely different green.
