Finally, late Tuesday morning, it came.
I asked the driver why he hadn’t delivered it the day before, as indicated. He said he fell (I’m assuming slipped on ice) and took the rest of the day off.
So, no doubt, my order sat in his truck overnight, in -14 Celsius temperature, and this looks to be the result.
I tried submersing them in boiled water for 30 minutes, but to no avail.
Anyone know how to save Micro Gloss and Micro Flat that has been frozen?
I’ve never had luck reconstituing frozen paints.
Usually once a paint has frozen that’s it. The nature of the chemicals has changed and even if you thaw and mix it, using it would provide inconsistent results at best.
Would be better off and less frustrating to replace them.
Ya, that’s what I figured. Gonna have to wait a few months when the weather is warmer as I’ll have to order them online again. The hobby store where I live sucks and very often does not have what I’m looking for in stock. Including these items. I’m not sure if they even carry them as there’s not even a spot on the shelf for them. They have other Microscale products but not these. Makes no sense.
Sorry to hear that Mark and I hope you get a resolution to this soon. I will say that at least you guys have some sort of hobby shop locally. Here in Corpus, Hobby Lobby is it. I suppose I should be grateful that there’s at least basic hobby supplies at my fingertips, but I would absolutely LOVE to have some sort of hobby shop dedicated to this hobby nearby.
@mustang1989 Is that Corpus as in Corpus Christi? No hobby shop there? Wow! I’m shocked.
Re: Hobby Lobby….as I’ve been researching lately, I’ve heard of this chain a few times now. I mentioned it to my wife (she makes earrings) and she’d heard of it too. Anyway, up in Canada, we don’t have any Hobby Lobbys that I’m aware of, but we do have Michael’s. It looks like they are similar stores and it dawned on me that perhaps our Michael’s has a scale modeling section. I’ll be checking that out next time I’m in that area of the city it’s in.
@the_Baron Thanks for that link. I’ve sent them an email asking what the freezing point is and if they can be restored somehow. I’ll let you know what they say.
Hi Mark,
Not sure if it would help but, seems that a few guys have recommended windsor and newton galeria flat. Could try looking at michael’s or another art store.
@the_Baron
From Microscale… “Thank you for your email. Those solutions are water-based so their freezing point would be 0 C. We don’t recommend using either of these solutions after they’ve been frozen and rethawed as we can’t guarantee the integrity of the solutions once they’ve frozen.”
I knew it was water based. That’s pretty obvious as clean up is with water. I figured perhaps whatever else is in there might lower the freezing point.
Anyhoo, never to order it again online in the winter.
@MisterMeester . Well I guess that is that Mark. Sorry to hear you’re going through all of this. Hopefully, you’ll get something figured out with this for the project you’re working on.
We have Michael’s out here as well. They do have a model section though it’s selection can vary widely by store. They do tend to carry Testors and Vallejo so there’s a good chance you might find an alternate there. I use Vallejo acrylic clears regularly and have no complaints.
If you have any “game stores” nearby, you might check with them. My local “comics and games” shop, which sells a variety of tabletop wargaming brands like Warhammer 40K and Bolt Action, has a comprehensive assortment of Vallejo paints and varnishes, plus several other brands, in addition to cements, tools, diorama supplies, etc etc.
No worries. I got them for decaling. My research on that indicated that I should put down a gloss coat first. Hence, the Micro Gloss. My 3rd project on the go is a Polar Lights Batmobile. There are some decals involved. Perfect introduction project to that. It’s early in the build and at the point to put down decals on the dashboard. The Micro Flat was for a finish coat.
I’ll have a chat with my local hobby shop. Otherwise, it can wait for warmer temps and another online order. Not in a rush.
@Toimi_Tom Yes! Good advice! There is a gamer store in the “city” I live in, but they don’t have much. Some Vallejo Game Color and some brushes. I bought some Vallejo detail brushes from them last year as I didn’t want to walk out the store with nothing. However, I’m sure there’s more than one gamer store in the bigger city 20 minutes away to the south. I’ll check that out.
