Is there a best way to make frosted glass for diffusing LEDs in sci-fi models. I know lacquer thinner will craze plastic but would it be the right choice?
Have you thought about using a dull or matte coat? I think it would be better at getting uniform coverage.
I agree with Fly-n-hi. I’ve also used tissue/tracing paper for my Enterprise E (and other ships). I drilled the windows out, then glued (elmers) tracing paper on the inside of the hull. Worked well.
Sand the LEDs with 600 grit wet or dry paper to frost the lense.

The problem with this is that you only diffuse the light source. If you put a cleat part over the LED you still see the LED very clearly.
There is also spray can stuff available at hardware and paint stores that makes it even more diffusing than the dullcoat and stuff like that. I have also used a very thin coat of flat white.
Hi ;
What I do is paint the whole back side of the strips I use for my models with TAMIYA EXTRA THIN glue .A wide soft brush and one sweep will do the job , Or you can do two and then No More . T.B.
I’ve seen a can of paint at Walmart called “frosted glass”. I’ve never tried it but have wanted to.
On several of my scifi kits I’ve sprayed a sheet of Mylar (aka overhead projector transparency) with several coats of dull coat on both sides. I cut out a piece of this and placed it between the led and the exterior. I thought it worked very well.
Yes, that is the stuff I was referring too. I have a can- it works very nice.
Ya Know DON ;
You don’t leave any secrets for me ! LOL.LOL. I too have a can of that , funny , I’ve only used it on cars ! T.B.
Frosted Scotch tape.
Yay :
Give the man a Starbucks ! This method has worked well for as long as the product has been around .
As to “frosting” how does the frosted glass paint compare to something like Testors dull coat?
