French M201 Hotchkiss jeep build

My next build is another I have wanted to do for a while. It is a license-built Willys MB by Hotchkiss of France for the French military and was known as an M201.

I plan on building a late model one in NATO camo with a roll bar.

The French military used the M201 until the final one was retired in 2000. Hotchkiss made some French-specific mods to the M201 over the years. The most visible that applies to the model include the following: a new windshield wiper motor with its protective casing; a French-specific blackout drive light, which is flatter than the US version; removing the windshield rest blocks on hood and replacing them with two brackets on the windshield; a French-style jerrycan; a larger rectangular side rearview mirror; turn signal lights on the grille, and two rear brackets to accommodate turn signal lights compliant with French traffic regulations; one or two French antenna bases; a chemical decontamination bottle and support on the right fender support; a side mount weapons pintle; and Kleber tires.

I have made all these mods (and a few others - more later). Most of the mods were achieved by 3D designing and printing the needed parts.

Here it is so far. The base is the Tamiya Willys MB kit (35219). All of the dark gray parts are 3D printed. The white parts are styrene. The windshield wiper motor and bracket part is from a Heller French jeep kit. It is about all that is usable in the kit; the rest is junk.

I found a set of the Kleber tires on Cults 3D and printed the off. They are very nice and fit the Tamiya kit perfectly.

The other major changes are under the hood. Hotchkiss modified the M201 by upgrading to a 12v electrical system. The original Willys MB had a 6 volt system. To do this, they added another battery under the hood. To fit the battery, they had to move some stuff around. The voltage regulator was moved from the side panel behind the battery to the firewall. They also had to move the air cleaner from the passenger side to the driver’s side facing forward. They also used a different, flatter horn and a square distributer. Lastly, they added a second set of pulleys and a second fan belt.

Willys MB engine compartment.

M201 engine compartment.

I reworked the engine compartment to an M201 compartment. The batteries will be added later and are 3D printed. I made a 3D printed double fan belt setup and horn. The distributer came from an M38 detail set and I made a ignition coil from a piece of tubing. Lastly, it will be plumbed after painting.

Here are the rest of the detail parts. Seats, a French TRVP-13 radio and handset, French jerry cans, batteries, decon bottle in bracket, weapons, and tools.

Next up is painting and then decals from the Heller French jeep kit.

What a great job you have done here. I particularly enjoyed the breakdown of the French model’s differences to the U.S. version.

Me love a good Jeep build! Who woulda thought that these would be used into the 2000s?
Over time, youd think that the design would change/become more modernized but in this case no which leads me to say, why change such a good lookin design?

Making some good progress on this one. Looking forward to seeing the completed model

Thanks gents. It is amazing how long the original Willys design has hung on. Many countries still use them.

I have been working on an ammo can for the AA-52 LMG that will go on the jeep. There is no ammo can available as AM items and only a couple in French vehicle kits, of which I do not have any. So I went and CADed one up myself.

Here is an actual one.

Here is my version.

I also got some paint on the jeep. The green is Tamiya XF-5 which I read is an exact match for the green in the French version of NATO camo, which is a brighter green. It looks right to me. The other colors are Military Brown and black. The interiors and roll bar were left dark OD green.

Next up is detail painting, decals, weathering, etc., etc., etc…

I just noticed an item I need to correct. I painted the rear of the windshield frame to match the hood camo so it blends in when down.

Apparently, that is not how they were. The back of the windshield frame was also left dark OD green like the rest of the interior.

An easy fix. Back to the paint booth.

Thanks Gary. I like it too.

I have completed the M201 Hotchkiss jeep in a late '80s configuration. I added some decals from the Heller kit and the rest were homemade on my computer and printer. I used the front Heller ID number and the red decals on the windscreen and left side. I made an ID number for the rear since the kit one was too big. I also added the additional gold-colored ID plate from Hotchkiss on the right side of the dash above the standard jeep data plates. It is marked as a jeep from an Artillery Bn with the tactical symbol on the front and rear bumpers. I also made the French Army symbols on the sides of the hood. I weathered it with a couple drybrushes of sandy colors.

Here it is.

Some of the closer details. Just about all the added gear and details are 3D printed by me. The only plastic part is the rucksack and bedroll under it from an old Heller French figure set.

Here is the wired and detailed engine.

Lastly, I decided to add a trailer to it. I used the Academy trailer from their M151A2 Hardtop kit. It comes with both rounded and angled wheel arches to make it either a Willys MB trailer or an M416 trailer. I went w/the rounded arched for a Hotchkiss-built Willys MB trailer. The French also added a couple things to the trailer. They added grab handles at the front, a spare tire, and a holder on the right front to store the light cable in. I also added chains and a cable for the trailer lights. All of the stowage in the trailer is 3D printed as well. It includes spare tires, a toolbox, jack, tire irons, and fuel cans. I envisioned it as a maintenance jeep/trailer.

I enjoyed this project and learned a lot by designing and printing the 3D parts for it. I am really happy with how it came out. It looks like an M201 Hotchkiss jeep to me.

That there is some excellent building!

Thanks Regular. It was a fun build.

That turned out very sharp! You’re right about the Tamiya XF5 being a good match for the green on the French version of the NATO three color camo.

On a related side note, how hard is it to design your own stuff for 3D printing?

Thanks Stik. I like how it turned out too.

Not too hard. I started with small stuff by cutting up/separating existing pieces to get subassemblies. I then went on to make simple things like adding a strap to a jerry can. Then you can work your way up to making your own designs. I’m no expert, but with practice, it will all come together. Good luck.

Thanks Gino. One last question on creating your own 3D designs, what apps/software/programs do you use?

I use the Chitubox software that came with my printer. I also bought the advanced version of it which allows me to do more with it, like cutting, joining, etc.

Gino, that Jeep turned out great! I’m diggin the overall look too.
Where did the trailer come from? The Mutt w/traier combo?
Happy Modeling,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I like how it turned out too. The trailer is from the Academy M151A2 Hardtop kit. It comes with both the squared off fenders (M416) and the rounded (MB) fenders for the trailer.

You are most welcome Gino! Ah ok, cool. Tamiya offers essentially the same combo but there is only one choice for the trailers fenders.
I like that you get the optional fenders with the Academy offering!
