…interesting…I read a story that was supposedly the reason behind the German’s choosing dark yellow for their new base-color starting in Feb '43: After they invaded Russia they found that their Panzer Grey vehicles took on a light, dusty color after a few weeks of treking over the steppes in the summer of '41…when German camo and color experts back in Berlin heard about and saw this they tried to replicate this light, dusty color in the lab and what they came up with was dark ochre…a paint was developed and issued out about a year later…
Is there any similar stories for the colors used in Africa on DAK vehicles? Some sources show them being used in southern Russia during 1942.
…true you are: some Panzer Divisions (5th being one of them, I believe) slated for service in the DAK was hastily sent to the Caucaus in '42 to shore up things there and left in their Sand-Brown color…this was the first time as far as I know a German AFV was seen in continental Europe w/o the overall Panzer Grey base…this really opened up the floodgates for the wild and crazy schemes we all saw later on…
…yeah, I wonder how popular german armor would be if they never changed from their overall panzer grey color??? Think about it…
…also, let’s talk uniforms…don’t even get me started there…I mean, who could have designed a more cool tanker wrap than the one the Germans had? Forget the technology factor, they were way ahead of everyone in the “cool” factor…
There is no doubt that a panzer grey tiger looks like a war machine from (add your word of choice). Enough so that it scared the fire out of those haveing to go up against it. A plain yellow one just aint got the same juice. And if you paint it OD then its, drab. Nobody could touch the Germans in cammo. Armor, Aircraft, Uniforms. I think Pea Pattern is the best ever. What if ya did a Hetzer in a pea pattern with crew in matching cammo? But what color should an elephant be? Do one in some intensly weathed panzer grey with a crew in u boat leathers and nobody should care how accurate it is. A tiger 2 or Jagdtiger would look nasty that way as well. A panther, stug, or jagdpanther in oakleaf? Just plain wicked.
Only thing I get tired of is people calling me an anti-semetic hitler loving nazi. Stating that we should just destroy and forget that part of history. Yup, wonderful idea, so that way in another 30-40 years we can do it all over again. Sounds like fun. Morons. I think it’s about the history, and about the machinary. All the documentaries and info that floats around everywhere is about the allied stuff because that is what is politically correct to speak about, axis is politically incorrect, and can get you labeled exactly what I have been called. So we already have allied stuff dripping off of us, and we have to make do ourselves with the rest. Also sorry to all the engineers and naysayers who don’t know jack, just their blind bias, but for the most part, the Germans had the best stuff, with few exceptions. Sure we had the Sherman, and the P47, and the P51, and a couple of other small niceties. Look at what the Germans had in comparison. The Stug III and IV, PAnzer III, IV, V, VI(both of the Panzer VI’s the Tiger and King Tiger), the BF-109, FW190, ME262, Stuka, the list goes on. Most of their equipment was just elegant and beautiful, whereas most of ours was just well, homly.
Oh yeah one more thing, not to mention there is a different between European motors and Jap motors. Sure you can get a Honda crotch rocket for 8 grand that will do 220mph, and a Ducati that does the same for 25-30 grand. So common thinking go with the Honda right? Well the Ducati has something the Honda lacks. Refinement. One is stamped out by the thousand, and built by machine, the other is not. German armor had refinement levels that allied did not.
Michael
I dont know if this is off topic but heres what I think. When I was a Young modeller my dad would never let me build German armor because he says I dont want you to be glorifying the nazis and what they’ve done. But im not im bulding German armor because I like the design and the differnt looks it has. It kind of gets boring building Sherman after Sherman.
…gotta love those powerful 75’s and 88’s:

Similar situation as me then tankluver. What your father and my mother don’t understand is that, one if you erase history, you are doomed to repeat it, and two, not every WWII German soldier was a Nazi. They were doing their job as ordered. Aside from that Germany wasn’t the first country to try and commit genocide and then take over the world.
Fantacmet,
My thoughts and prayers to your cousin and his family. My father was a volunteer fireman/EMT for several years so I know what he’s dealing with in terms of the coverage and such, good luck with the fundraising. [tup]
…funny how the Western world has glossed over Napolean’s conquest of Europe…we don’t look down on the French (at least for that reason) or regard them with suspicion as we sometimes do with the Germans…
because we know the french can’t win a war. [:P]
but seriously, world domination is one thing, race-hatred genocide is another. you can’t blame someone for trying to take over the world… but you can blame someone for killing millions based on race. we can’t really compare imperial france and nazi germany in that respect can we?
I dont’ even really advertise modeling ww2 german armour to my friends or family… if they ask i’ll tell them but its such a touchy subject that i’d rather not give the wrong impression, even if i could win the argument.
Much appreciated. I don’t mean to hijack this thread of Manny, but I think a post or two off topic he’ll understand considering. So far it has been real slow going. There is some promise though, as I deliver pizza, and I decided to airbrush my windows with the website and save his life. I was 20 minutes early to a delivery that is 15 minutes away from the station(manager screwup) so the customer wasn’t home. So I ended up havaing to wait, and isntead of waiting in the driveway/street I went down to the end of the lot and parked. One of his neighbors inquired about it, and I told him what was up. Well he was going to donate the next day when he got paid, and in addition he has a friend with a Christan Cable TV Show. So he got my information, and is going to try talking his friend into plugging it on the show, so hopefully we will be able to reach more people. I guess the show has over 10K viewers, so if even 10% of them donated 5-10 bucks each that would knock out a big hunk of what we need. It only takes 7200 people to chip in 5 bucks, and we’ll hve the $$ needed. We’ve been going for about 2 months, and as far as I can tell we have only gotten about 500-1000 dollars. Most people simply reply, that’s too bad, I would really love to help, but that 5 bucks could be used for this or this. These are the same people who have about 300-400 bucks left out of each paycheck after all their extracurricular spending, when the next paycheck comes around. It’s sad most of the people who really can’t are the ones who would. The ones who could donate 500 bucks without it hurting them in the least are the ones who go, oh thats to bad, now onto business. I’m not going to press on it in any forums, but I can at least put it in my sig and hope that a few people will anti up 5 bucks. To the best of my knowledge, nobody from here has donated a cent(I don’t know for sure though, and I’m not bashing on anyone I know I’m not the only poor man here). You are only the second or third person from here who has even said anything about it. The firearm forum I participate in, within 4 horus I had 2 people comment privately, and one donated 10 bucks, and the other 50. Since then a couple of weeks ago, I’ve seen about a dozen and a half comments come through and about 5 or 6 donations totalling about 130 bucks. However the people over there, generally have alot more cash, and are more of the same identical mindset when it comes to things like this. On a modeling forum, the mindsets are as diverse as the rest of America. I suspect that nobody has donated a cent from here, but I also suspect, that it’s only temporary and that quite a few are waiting for another month or so for something to come in, at which point I suspect that probably a good 400-500 total will be coming from here in the next 1-2 months. It’s a gut feeling. If anyone has any idea’s, by all means message me privately. The local model club is going to see what they can do, I’m a new member, but most of the members feel that they’ve been plucked and don’t want to give another red cent to anything, because they’ve all been donating kits and supplies to soldiers in Iraq. At the very least maybe we can egt some publicity up to the club, and on the website. Will have to see. Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers. Manny, the thread is all yours once again. [:D]
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Damn that’s funny.
No offense to any French who may be here, but if you have any sense of reality you will understand that comment completely, and won’t take any offense.
Quote: “you can’t blame someone for trying to take over the world”
hmmmmmmm…okay…
Fantacmet,
You have a PM. [:)]
how many people do you see blaming the British Empire (aside from previous colonies, a biased opinion but valid), or American ‘world policing’ (not my view but a valid argument), or the Roman Empire or any other dubitable land expansionary policy? In that time and age, it was survival of the fittest. we won’t see maps changing so rapidly as it did in the 1800’s or early half of the 1900’s again (god willing)
…another example of the powerful 75, 88mm guns…

Interesting photo of the Sherman. Doesnt look like that one burned so it can be recovered, repaired, and sent back into action. Also not the glancing hit off the turret.
The rifleman next to the M4 looks like the one Tamiya used to model the one that comes with their old M3A2 Half track.
…Yeah, Tamiya, used actual pics for a lot of their ideas…notice also the boatload of what appears to be US anti-infantry mines stacked up against the wall…the KIA’s appear to be German…
