Folding wings & going nuts????

Hi!!!

I’m going to build several US Navy 1/72 kits, and i was thinking to get a way i can display the wings of the model folded or no, with some sort of “pivoting” way so i can put the wing folded or no…

Does anyone has donne this before???

I was thinking in getting some way a metal part to do the “pivoting” axis…

I know it might sound nuts, but i think i might be viable…

Please, let me know what do you think!!!

Obrigado

Did you want to build it folded or have it articulated ? There are probably conversion sets for building the wings folded. With brass rod & sheet you may be able to make it moveable.

Hmmm…I just had what may be a good idea: instead of making some kind of pivot or hinge so the wing actually moves, how about a non-moving installation that you simply change by removing the wing and installing in whichever position you want to display it in? In other words, there could be one special piece in between the folding sections of the wing depicting the “folded” configuration with all the proper detail, and another special piece to hold the wings on firmly in the “unfolded” configuration. Something that you could just slide into the wing sections that would hold them firmly in either position.
That way, you could have great detail in the folding mechanism (which would be very difficult in a moving version), plus a solid model in the unfolded position.
Does any of that make any sense?

Well, i did come with an ideia so i can use some pieces of thin steel wire, to connect both wing parts, and use another part so i can reunite both in the unfold position…
Here’s an ASCII draft:

Unfold position

Wing ------------Wire------------- External wing

Folding gap (just a panel line wide)

Of course that the wire would have to be strong, but real thin, so i can disimulate it with some of the folding wing mechanism…

What do you all think???

In 72nd scale the best bet for you is to use straight and bent wire.
Use the straight wire for closed and the bent wire for open.
That way you only have to drill 2 holes and it looks neater.

That’s my ideia…[;)]

I just hope that when the wings are joined in the normal position the gap isn’t too big…[:I][V]

Many thanks to all, and if anyone has donne this before, can you post any pics???

Many thanks!!!

Needls (really thin ones) is also a good way…

This might sound a bit crazy but if you need thin steel wires which can hold a lot of weight you could try electric guitar strings.
Get a set of 8´s or 9´s and use the thin E string.
