Folding ROTORS for deck space??

Do some of the larger helos have folding rotors like the Sea kings?

I have seen ‘one’ drawing of the Super frelon from the top where it looked like the main rotors fold for deck space or something.

Is it possible?

The Super Frelon SA 321 is carried on board the French carrier Charles de Gaulle. So the main rotors definitely fold. The H-53 Stallion family also have folding rotor systems.

And why not both alternatives???

Maybe trying to get two pairs of rotors, or some sort of scheme to fold the blades…

Just my though, since i wanted to build some Navy helos, with both options for the same helo…

I’m open to suggestions…

Golly!.. when I get home today from work ( you know…that thing that interferes with our Hobbies! ) I will check out the possibilities of making it with possible rotors, I would have to do some work to make them folded anyways.[:D]

I made the rotors of a Heller 1/35th scale Super Frelon in the folded position. The kit parts came with the hinges molded as separate pieces and they could be made folded or in the locked configuration. It was a great space saving feature. Looks pretty cool too.

All US Navy and USMC helos have folding blades:

H-53s
H-46s
H-60s
H-3s

AH/UH-1 upgrades with 4 blades will also fold

The Heller 1/35 Super Frelon’s rotors can be positioned into the folded mode so easily I’m surprised that they did not make it part of the kits options! …either way it works for me!

The CH-53E has 7 blades, six of which fold. The #1 blade hangs over the back, and therefore doesn’t need to fold. The tail pylon folds to the right and down to shorten the length of the aircraft and reduce the height of the main rotor blades. This allows the aircraft to fit inside the hanger deck of LHA (Landing Helicopter Assault) and LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) ships.

FYI,
The blades on our HH-60G’s fold up as well so we can ship them out on C-5’s or C-17’s. That’s how we got them over to K-1, and Iraq. The blades on Pave Low’s and Little birds fold as well.
