I’ve just picked up Tamiyas Fw-190 A-3 kit. I’m new to luftwaffe modelling so I have a few questions.
-First off, What colour was the cockpit and wheel bays painted? I have a few RLM colours, but not many.
-What colours were used in the camouflage? I plan on doing the scheme in the kit (black 13 with yellow rudders and chin with the big eagles on the fuselage sides.).
-What colours were the engine?
-Does anyone know of any good walkarounds or detail photos on the net?
-And finally, what is evryones opinion of this kit? It looks good in the box, but is there any problems to look out for?
I’m not sure if you are refering to the 1/72 or 1/48 kit…my sig photo is the 1/72 scale Tamiya kit. I had no problems with what I considered one of the finest kits I’ve ever put together. Great detail, fit and engineering. I built it OOB and it looks just fine that way.
The interior color should be RLM 66. The top surfaces should be RLM 74/75 over RLM 76 on the belly. I used Modelmaster for the top colors and Pollyscale for the undersides. The prop and spinner were in most cases RLM 70 (Gunze RLM 70 on my kit). The engine won’t be visible with the prop and cooling fan in place so I would not worry too much about it though I think the cylinders were black with the case being dark gray. The wheel wells, gear legs, and door interiors should be RLM 02. I used Pollyscale for that as well.
There are many reference photos to be found…try the Hyperscale.com site and check the reference section.
Thanks mate. Your build looks very nice. I was refering to the 1/48 kit. Are the fuselage sides the same colour as the undersurfaces (RLM 76)? Thanks again.
Daniel, the fuselage sides would be RLM76 as well. Basically all the under surfaces and vertical surfaces, ie fuselage sides and tail fin would be RLM76 with a mottle of RLM74/75 over the top.

All of the above advice is correct for an A3 model. Only thing I can add is relative to the Tamiya 1/48 kit. It is a well engineered kit, mostly good fit, builds into a fairly accurate model OOB & is the only A3 kit available in 1/48. Biggest downside is the prop, which is inaccurately shaped, the blades are much to narrow in chord.
Yes… you are right… RLM 66 for cockpit interior, RLM 02 for landing gear, landing gear wells and inside of landing gear doors, I suggest you to paint the wheels tire black or flat black (matt), and wheel hubs with a gloss black, it looks very well… propeller and propeller hub usually are RLM 70, sometimes with a white spiral… cammo is RLM 76 for the undersides and RLM 74 and RLM 75 for the upper sides… if black, white and yellow are required for fuselage bands, rudders, etc, they would be (in this order) RLM 22, RLM 21 and RLM 04
Thanks for the info everyone. Now I’ve just gotta get some RLM 74, 75 and 76, I’ve already got some 66 and 02 so I’ve made a start on the cockpit and wheel bays.
