Flesh Paint

Can anyone give me some advice or suggestions on flesh coloured paint(s). I’ve tried flesh enamel paint by Revell and Humbrol, experimenting with application via airbrush and brush plus various ratios of thinners and without. Each of these have left the finish tacky for months.

I’ve used Tamiya spray can and had good results with the finished application but the colour looks fake in being too much like a tan shade.

Can anyone kindly recommend a brand that dries well in either airbrush or normal brushing applications and with a natural finish. I would consider acrylic paints and open to suggestions.

Many thanks

Dave

One problem I have found with flesh colored paints is that they are usually not flat enough. I have taken to putting on a fairly dry coat of a flat primer (usually Krylon). Then, I drybrush on the supposedly flat color. Just a little at a time- let it dry- brush on some more. So the flesh color never goes on very wet. Makes a flatter result that way.

I have used Humbrol often enough with good results. Whenever it has been tacky for me, it was because I did not stir it thorougly enough. My favorite Flesh tone was by Pactra, but it is long discontinued. I like Gunze Aqueous, but that has to be airbrushed for best finish in my experience.

Vallejo makes a line of various flesh tones and highlights,They are made for hand brushing figures.

That’s the Vallejo Color line, not Vallejo Air

Yep, I love Vallejo for 1/35 or smaller. For the bigger stuff like 1/6 busts etc,you might want to look into artists oils

Many thanks for the replies Don, Stikpusher, Tojo and Raualduke, I’ll look into Krylon and Gunze Aqueous give it some thought. In the mean time I might try LifeColour or Vallejo Acryllics and give them ago as lots now seems be using those now instead of enamel based paints. I’ll post back when I’ve given either a try.

One again cheers for the tips folks.

Dave; I recentley ran out of MM flesh dried up in bottle this has happehed to me before so I stopped buying MM flesh. So I tried some MM sand I like it a lot better, looks better and dries flatter than flesh color. ACESES5 [snWcm]

Yes, I have also use MM sand for flesh. I think it is more realistic than their flesh color

I’ve found a base of acrylic, such as Tamiya XF-15 flat flesh works best. Washed with MM enamel skin tone tints an testors enamel airbrush thinner. The acrylic holds together well with the enamel washes over them

I’ve never had any problem with any paint being tacky at least not for months especially with the brands you mentioned so I’m not sure what to tell you there. I’ll echo what Tojo72 said. I really like Vallejo acrylics. I’ve been using them almost exclusively lately and I recently ordered and received their 72 color boxed assortment for airbrush. They have an 8 color boxed assortment for flesh tones which I also have but haven’t used yet. Their paint brushes on well and it comes in squeeze bottles which makes it easier when you only need a small amount of paint to work with.

If you are doing some pretty high end figure work, or bigger scales it is quite common for the figure guys to mix their own flesh colors. Mixing raw sienna and burnt sienna in various ratios along with white will give excellent flesh colors for caucasions and for some darker skinned people as well. I am thinking about Latinos and such.

For brush painting you want Vallejo or Lifecolor, nothing else.
