Fleet Air Arm Corsair's in WWII

Hey folks,

I’m thinking of doing another FAA build and I want to tackle the Corsair. I was just wondering if there were any major differences between the US Navy and Royal Navy versions. In other words, could I simply build a US variant and put UK markings on it?

Thanks for your help,

I hope this will help! The British Corsairs had their folding wings shortened slightly,20cm., to better fit the smaller British carriers. That’s all I can find, good luck!

David

Hey Darren,

I’m just about to start on a FAA Seafire IIc, do you think there would be enough interest on this site for a FAA Group Build?

Cheers

Thanks David,

I did a bit more reading last night and you are right, the good thing is I can use a Tamiya F4U-1A to do the job and I’ve found a nice set of decals too. I recon clipping the wings will be easy enough to do. Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.[tup]

Darren,

sounds like a great idea! Since doing my FRS1 Harrier I’ve definately got the Fleet Air Arm bug!

I have a Wildcat ready to go, and I’m sure my Corsair won’t be far behind. Lets see if anyone wants to have a go.

A google search lead me to this forum thread:

http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/aviation/fleet-air-arm-use-f4u-corsair-5313.html

Never really had any interest but after reading the Hellcat thread and now this one, it sounds like it would be fun. I like to build something a little different than the typical Spitfire, P-51, Me109 etc. Not positive what I’d do yet but I was thinking maybe a Wildcat (Martlet?). As I am sort of involved in a few other builds it would be great if this were to start maybe April / May? or a little later.

This seems to be gathering interest here, I’ve got plenty of FAA builds in the pipeline so I would love a FAA group build. I’ll start a new thread and see what happens.

I don’t know the rules for a GB, but I recon anything that has flown in RN colours is fair game.

Lets see who likes the idea and go from there.[:)]

Darren that’s pretty much in line with I was thinking any scale, any period as long as it flew with the FAA.

Cheers

Also, as another reference, here is the link to the official FAA’s aircraft from 1939 to 1945, including the Corsair:

It just so happens that I am using it to finish a HobbyCraft British (Canadian)Corsair, using the photo of the Corsair Mk FG-1D KD345 [130] (G-FGID) flown by 1850 Squadron flying from HMS Vengence in British Pacific Fleet colors between 1945 and 1946 for inspiration.

By the way, if you can get your hands on the 1/48th Hobbycraft kit, they also include new special wingtips to replace those you cut off of the kits wings. It is very nice.

OK?

Many thanks Tom.[tup] I would’nt mind having a look at that hobbycraft kit-got any pics?

Not yet, but here’s the scheme:

I am still working on fiting the engine/cowling right, as the HobbyCraft kit is very difficult in this department.

The main difference between the illustration and the kit I am finishing is I have both the wings flaps down as well as the cowling flaps open (they throw in both options in the kit).

I will be glad to post them as soon as I can.

Tom [C):-)]

I’ve seen photographs of that one somewhere, nice scheme. I’ll look forward to having a look at it in the future.

The photograph of the actual plane is on the website I posted.

All you do is click on “Aircraft”, then on "Naval Aircraft Database: Aircraft Profiles 1939-45 " then pick the plane you like, in this case the Corsair.

Would you like it as an entry for your proposed group build?

You know, the Curtiss Helldiver is there also [;)]

Tom [C):-)]

I would love to do an FAA build! But you’re right, Aaronw: it might be best to wait a few months, I’m also already in the middle of three or four other GB’s.

Anybody know of a good 1/48th and/or 1/32nd kit of the Sea Fury? I’ve always loved the SF, it’s so elegant, I would love to build a model of one.

Tom,

I thought your Corsair looked familiar! If you would like to enter your model into our group build we would be nore than happy to see it there.[^][tup] Please consider yourself invited to the party.[;)]

I checked out the Helldiver too, I live near an old NAS where FAA helldivers were stationed between overseas deployments, I would love to build one from my local base. That would be really cool[8D]. I’m still searching for the decals that I need. I have some photo’s, so I have some info to go on, until then, I’m still gathering info.

SoD Stitch and Aaronw,

please join in whenever you are ready…this is a “relaxed” time scale. If you want to jump in later on, thats cool.[tup]

We have stated a thread on the Group Build forum already. We are not actually starting until April, but please drop in and post whenever the mood takes you. There are only ytwo rules to this build:

  1. It has to be a Fleet Air Arm aircraft (Prop/Jet/Helo)

2.You have to have fun!

Post a copy of the photo you have in mind, or send it to me e-mail addy as an attachment, and I can check my decal archive for you.

Mailing some to the U.K. isn’t that expensive [;)]

Tom [C):-)]

Thanks Tom,

I’ll look through my photo’s and send you a pic of the one I mean. I have it on the hard drive somewhere.[tup]

Hi Tom,
I knew I had them somwhere!

here’s the helldiver that was based just at my local NAS during WWII. The base is deserted now, just a monument marks the spot. If you are interested this is the memorial website of the base:
http://www.hms-ringtail.co.uk/

Here’s the photo’s…this Helldiver was with 1820 Sqn. FAA.

Nice photos Darren, but I cannot tell what the markings would be. [%-)]

I would guess they were made with that info omitted for the sake of security at that time.

We all know about the roundals, except, in some cases they had no white in the upper wings, or the fin flash, and in other cases they surrounded them with either white or yellow bands, and as for the squadron designations, those ranged from tiny to huge letters, again dependending on which way the crew chief chose to interpret the “official spec” that day. [swg]

This is more like what I was thinking of for a photo:

or, better still:

See, nice big picture, with clear color markings, etc, to determine decal size from, as well as the scale of your subject. [:D]
