hi ,have anyone build the tamiya german 88mm flak yet? great kit for dio’s[:D]

Hello fellow Belgian…! Glad to see you here! Never built that kit, only Airfix’ 1/76 offering… Is yours completed? Any pics?

Domi

hi djmodels , i’m just starting on building it to put it on a flakemplacement loking over the dunes (coast)like i think there was one in mariakerke during ww2 (flakbattr.2./252), i just get the kit from my wife for x-mass[^]. this weekend we went to brussels to the modelingshop : point 50 (rue lemonier) man i could stic in the shop the hole day (incredible stuf the have there) small shop but stacked from the floor to the sealing. good to hear from you, i thought i was the only belgian around here[:D]

I built and painted one that i bought from a hobby lobby 50% off sale. Detail wise, its ok i suppose. I think the kit number is 17 so there are a lot of problems with this kit that most of the pre 35146 kits have. For example, the fuze setter box looks like its two molds pressed into one, but the alignment is poor. So it looks like you chopped the box in half and then moved one of the halves up by .5 millimeter (very noticable). This problem also appears on top of the recuperator and in other highly visible places. The two moving crucifix have a part that moves in real life, but on this model looks kinda strange because its not connected to anything and doesnt move realistically.

On the whole, the kit was decent i suppose. Not like you have another choice of 1/35 88mm flaks. I wish the tamiya sd kfz 7/1 werent so hard to get. The 88 flak alone looks pretty strange.

I built one about 25 years ago, and it looks it. [:D] Someday it will go to my son, when I run out of shelf space.

I have one along w/ a metal barrel for it, in the queue.
looking forward to it, but the figures kind of give me reason to wait.

i just picked up a 7/2 on eBay.
never have seen a 7/1.

Built the 88 many years ago too … still have it kicking around on the shelves. Not the greatest kit Tamiya ever made … but still fairly decent.

Pantsless - Military Hobbies lists the Sd.Kfz.7/1 as being available through them.

Ed - Here’s a pic of the kit

I am going to get that kit one of this days. It comes with so many figures and yes it would be good for a dio.

Sherm - thanks for the pic. i guess i had seen one of those; i was a losing bidder for one on eBay!
i was confused by the context, i thought he was referring to some kind of half track mounting an 88mm!

I built the kit several years ago. Detail is lacking in some areas, and there are some inaccuracies. I replaced the two recuperators with brass tubing, scratchbuilt the main gun shield from .010" styrene (kit shield is way too thick), rebuilt and folded over the automatic loader, cut off the fuser covers and drilled out the fuser hole locations, added a new handle to the breech and to the fuser box, cut off the molded chains and added real ones, and then added it all to the pretty much rebuilt 8-wheel transport carriage. Out of the box, the 88 is a good kit, full of detail. Because it’s as old as it is, it really needs some TLC to get it where it needs to be. If I can figure out how to do it, I’ll try to get some pics of my 88 on here.
The Schiffer book on the 88 is the best reference I’ve found.

thanks styrene looking forward to see some pictures , the few i found are not a lot of help due to the lack of detail , just one other question? what colour did they have as a flak batterie along the coast? (dark grey , sand with green camo patches or something else ?)

Aren’t these the same 88 guns that went into Panzers?

maffen,
Not sure about coastal colors. The Schiffer book I used was B/W. I painted mine a solid africa yellow. Sorry I’m not much help on that.

Michaelvk,
The 88 was used extensively everywhere. I think the Panzers used the Pak version, while the antiaircraft used the Flak version. There were (as I can remember) several designs, but all used the same 88 ammunition. (That is correct?).

Gip,

Are you talking about the Tamiya kit? Our local hobby shop has lots of them. Are these old kits just re-released?

Just asking because I am interested in the kit.

That is the second maodel i ever did but i only started the hobby a year ago. I had alot of fun with it.

I built the Tamiya 88 flak 36, is that what your talking about??? if so It was an excellent kit. I built it twice. the second one is ok but I will be building it again soon to get it right. 3rd time is a charm.

Dwight - simple answer to your question … yes … same kit that was around twenty some odd years ago, just re-released again and again.

I’ve always thought that model was neat. lots of activity!

Thanks for the reply Sherm. I thought all along that it was a new kit.

[xx(] I’m going slightly mad , la,la,la,la just finished making 50 brass shells for my .88 , must be a easy way to replicate casings without the use of rubber (can’t get them over here [:(]) by the way , in progress i’m burned a couple of times my fingers to [sigh]
