Fish Tank Model

Here’s one for you long timers: I built a '48 1/2 ton Ford, submersed it in my 30gallon fish tank, and after about 4-5 weeks, parts just started to float to the top. It was gradually “coming unglued”. Wa’d I do wrong?[?]

What glue did you use?

Don

Sorry about not mentioning the type of glue used…It was Testors Liquid Cement for styrene plastic (red container).

I have a question.
I haven’t built a model car in 20 years.
Why on earth would you put your pickup in an aquarium???

Randie [C):-)]

Hi there Chopperfan…

Well, to tell you the truth, I wanted to set up an aquarium somewhat different than usual, and I wanted an automotive theme.

It (the Truck) looked pretty neat while it lasted. As it fell apart, it took on the appearance of a truck in the junkyard [:D]

Maybe I’ll try superglue next time???

Whatever glue you use would probably kill fish.

Good point Cassibill.

All 10 goldfish did in fact die, I think over the same period of time it took for the truck to come unglued.

Maybe I bettewr just forget it???[xx(]

If you want a car in a fish tank find a ceramic one and clear glaze it. I have some odd stuff in fish tanks that way, like movie theaters, windmills…

I highly doubt if white glue is toxic…[;)]

But isn’t it also water soluble?

Yup, White glue would reduce the junking time from 4~5 weeks to 4~5 minutes.
[:D]

And I guess it might still clock up the gills of the poor fishes.

the paint would be another problem

You may have used too much glue, which would leech out into the water, poisoning the fish, and would simultaneously have weakened to plastic to the point that, instead of creating a hard bond, you created a soft one, and buoyancy just took over after a few weeks, tearing the pieces off and sending them to the top.

My suggestion would be to place in your fish tank only items designed to decorate the tank, and even those should be carefully cleaned per instructions. Fish get their oxygen from the water. Toxins leeching into in the water will poison them just as surely as large open vats of toluene-type glue in your home will eventually overcome you. And goldfish are hardier than most.

It would be if you poured it into your lungs. Remember, fish breathe water.

aquarium sealer might be an interesting glue.

Well, guys, whatever I do next, it won’t be placing models in the fish tank.

My 10 yr old Daughter has already said so, they WERE her fish [xx(]

Thank’s for all the responses [tup] - Happy modeling!

Well, if glue will kill the fish, how about a die-cast model? They seldom use glue to hold parts together (unless you use a high-end die cast - wish I doubt!).

Not much fun since you don’t actually build it, but it would look good…

i had an aircraft carrier in my tropical aquarium for about five years. it was an early one that was glued with airfix tube glue and painted with humbrol enamel, never had a problem with the fish dying either (cept when one of the fish that turned cannibal) the only problem was cleaning it… yuch. i changed the water fairly regularly tho hope this helps.
