first photo-etch railing trial AND ERROR

i now have a cement basement floor cleaner than the living room. lost 2 pe railings for starboard side conning tower of AFV 1/350 I-58 sub. i saw the second one fall past my left leg. where the hell did it go? so much for this model being in a contest. now it is a port side shelf model. so i put it away and back on my 1/35 MAS and my 1/350 KONIG. maybe longer railings will be easier. now i know why armor is so popular.

All of us feel your pain. [blkeye]

I really believe that in winter, with low humidity, there is an electric charge problem with small PE parts. I swear that sometimes the velocity at which they leave tweezers cannot be entirely do to mechanical forces. Also, I swear sometimes when I go to pick up a small PE part with tweezers I see it move as I approach it.

I am not sure where the electric charge would come from, but maybe even rubbing of clothes together. My floor in workshop is concrete with vinyl tiles- I suppose shoe soles on vinyl could generate charge. Maybe I should consider humidifier in shop!

A couple things you can do…use a very thin strip of tape, apply it to the part so it doesn’t interfere with you apply it to the model. The tape helps keep the parts from flying away and gives you some extra surface to hold on to. Experiment with different widths and placement. I usually apply the tape before I remove it from the fret.

Nothing is worse than losing those small parts and not being able to find them, ruins your day. im in the process of building Tamiya’s 1/350 Bismarck and am not looking forward to all the railings myself! if your planning to enter it in a competition cant you find a replacement for those bits? or would you have to by a whole set again. guess it depends on how badly you want it contested! good luck

just a local competition. i will now use it for my practice piece to include masking and painting. assuming i keep the rremainder of the pe i can always show just the port side on my shelf. no sense in screwing up my I-400. pulledf out a partially build KONIG and will start working pe on that. have 3 more in the stash, at least airbrushing last night went better.
