I just completed my first build for a GB and have to say I had a blast building this Revell P-51D mustang. It is the best model I have built, and I feel it wouldnt have been, had it not been for a number of people sharing advise and WIP pictures on the forum. I cant think of a better place to learn and improve ones skills than here. So without further adue here are some pictures. Please comments are welcomed, and thank you for all the help and encouragement I have recived.
This is a Revell P-51D kit # 5241 covered with foil. If you like check it out in the P-51 BG last page.
Looks great Randy. I have always wanted to try foil as a finish but I have always been a bit intimidated by it. Was this your first attemp at covering a plane with foil? If so you did a great job. In my opinion GB are the best part of being a member of FSM forums. Almost all of my builds in the last year have been for one GB or another. They are very addicting! So what is your next GB going to be?[:D]
Hey go for it !! The foil isnt really all that hard to work with just takes a bit longer than painting. Took 9 hours to foil the P-51 I think it is worth the time spent. My first attempt with foil was on a Testors P-47 Thunderbolt it came out looking pretty good but this one looks more real I think. I foiled the P-51 a panel at a time, on the P-47 I foiled the whole wing or section had all kinds of problems doing it that way. The panel at a time method worked very well, I didnt have near the wrinkle troubles with I had with the P-47 and the compound curves were much easier. Heres a link where you can see the P-47 and my other builds.
Excellent work Randy! You made the foil technique look easy. I also have not been brave enough to try it myself, but I like the look as what looks more real than real aluminum?
Thanks for sharing a very sharp looking Mustang. [^]
fermis I am chompin at the bit to jump into that kit, I keep lookin at that box an… I do have to get started on my other BG build too. What to do what to do.
Hey you have got to keep me and us posted on that fermis ! I would love to see your F-82 in the gallery right where it belongs. You did do a masterful job on her. Hope mine will come out close to yours, as it was your build that inspired me.
