To prove a point with a friend I need to find a single engine fighter in 1/72 scale to build that is both decently detailed and fairly inexpencive. He doesnt think I could finish an aircraft in this scale and I havnt because my specialty is armor and figures so I need to find a decent crow to feed him. Thanks for the help…
speaking of crow, academy has a 1/72 scale “Old Crow” (Bud Anderson’s P-51B with the Malcolm Hood)thats a very good model straight from the box. i picked it up from the hobby lobby for 8 bucks or so. maybe you could make a theme out of feeding him “crow”. LOL. later.
Any of the Tamiya offerings are very well detailed, but not exactly inexpensive. You might want to look at the Academy P-51B/C which is an excellent, moderate priced kit.
I have to agree with cplchilly, If I had to pick the best bang for the buck 1/72 scale kit it’s Academy’s P 51 C …
Sounds like a winner but I would also like to do a P-47 too just for myself (I got the bug now), Its always been my favorite Air Craft although I will build the P-51 first…
Revell has a very nice P-47 in that scale! Revell also has many very nice new tool kits in 1/72nd.
Hasegawa’s new tools are very nice in that scale too. A little less expensive than Tamiya, but more than Academy’s.
Academy probably has the best bang for the buck. The P-40M/N and P-39Q are very nice too, as is the Hawker Tempest.
Revell’s Fw190 is a sweet little kit, and very cheap.
It was the first kit I built when I returned to military modelling last year.

How are the decals in that Academy “Old Crow” kit? I’d love to do that a/c because Anderson is one of my favorite aces.
Revell do some really nice 1:72 planes - really starting to get into building planes of this scale now, just finished a Spitfire Mk V and am now working on an Italeri Spitfire Mk IX (though the fit hasn’t been as good - not sure what is holding it together more, filler or glue!!!) currently painting it with the black and white ‘invasion stripes’ (fingers crossed it should look rather good when finished).
If you want to do a 1/72 Thunderbolt, wait a while. Tamiya is releasing a scaled down version of their excellent 1/48 Razorback, with Bubble Top to follow.
I’ve built the Academy 1/72 P-51C Mustang, F6F Hellcat, P-47D Thunderbolt and P-40N Warhawk. They are all very detail, especially the P-40N Warhawk. They all cost less than Cdn$10(US$7.50-$8). The only problem is their decals, a little bit thick.
The Academy P-51B/C “Old Crow” kit, the Revell-Gemany P-51B pr P-51C kits or their P-47D(new) or M kits, all in 1/72, would be excellent choices. Good luck with the build. Let us know how things work out!
Well I settled on the Academy P47D kit (actually its all my hobbie shop had at the moment) but it looks like a nice kit for 10 bucks. I will probably do the checkertail version (might as well rub salt in the wound) Ive already painted all the interior details and will finish those tommorow. This will also be be the first Air Craft I have ever used an airbrush on so it should prove interesting.
