Below are photos of my 1/18 scale X-2 Skycycle Rocket flown by stunt performer Evel Knievel when he attempted to jump Snake River Canyon (Twin Falls, Idaho) on September 8, 1974. The basic assembly is a 3D Printing I purchased from the Evel Knievel Museum in Topeka, Kansas last year. Completing this project required a large amount of sanding, scratch-building and creating custom water-slide decals. The total project time was about 136 hours. The overall length is 15” (including nose boom and tailfin probe). The last few photos show the 3D Printing before any work began.
Thanks for the compliment. The jump turned out to be a pretty big “nothing” since the recovery parachute deployed almost immediately after launch causing the wind to take the X-2 back to the original side of the river. Knievel was initally blamed for causing this, but later analysis showed a mechanical flaw made it happen.
Thanks for the compliments! They are appreciated. I overlooked that most people on this forum either do not remember this event or have never heard of it. Below are a several photos taken the day the jump was made.
modelcrazy-Do you remember when stuntman Eddie Braun did a successful jump of Snake River Canyon in 2016? He built a very near duplicate of the X-2 (named EVEL SPIRIT). His success at least proved the engineering design of the X-2 as a stable rocket platform. I always thought the X-2 was a great looking design and the having the eye-popping American flag paint scheme makes it a very cool modeling subject.
