Just finished this one for the P-40 Warhawk group build, and thought I’d share some pictures here as well. This is Eduard’s 1/48 P-40N kit with Aeromaster decals, Ultracast exhausts, and a few scratchbuilt extras (brake lines and antenna). The Eduard kit includes resin and photoetch parts, so really little else is needed. Paints are mainly Model Master enamels, with some dabs of Xtracolour and Floquil thrown in.
The markings are of Robert Dehaven’s plane of the 7th FS/49th FG during early to mid 1944. Dehaven was one of the foremost combat pilots of the P-40, scoring 10 of his 14 kills flying the plane (his other four were in the P-38). He actually liked the P-40 as a combat plane, and even thought it out-performed the P-38 under certain conditions. Dehaven flew 3 P-40N’s, and I’ve tried to model his final one. My pictures may not show it well, but what you see on the side of the nose is an orchid. Dehaven also picked #13 for his planes since he considered it his lucky number (I believe he was born on January 13th).
Well, enough talking and on to the pictures!
As always, any constructive criticism or helpful comments are sought and appreciated. There are a few things I’d like to have done better (and one major boo boo that I managed to not photograph[;)]), but all-in-all I’m happy with the build.
Hey Mark,
Well done indeed my friend. When I go to do my “N”, I was thinking of DeHaven’s ship. Now since I saw yours, I am most definitely going to do it fer sure.
His a/c has a simple yet eye catching nose art even if it is a flower. I have a few of the Eduard P-40s and they are nicely done.
What did you use for your weathering/pre shading if any?? Thanks for sharing.
Flaps up, Mike
Mike, I preshaded both top and bottom with black, then faded the top with ever-increasing amounts of white mixed in with the OD, fading most on the fabric-covered surfaces. After the main colors went on I applied an oil wash. Since a lot of the preshading on top had disappeared by this time, I went over the panel lines on top with thinned Tamiya Smoke. I ended with a little paint chipping using a silver pencil.
leemitcheltree, Nick, Steve, Jerry, Mike, Peter, Johan, Lion Baron, Rick, mkhoot, and Brian: Thanks for the kind comments and taking the time to look at my build!
Thanks Bill! I felt pretty good about it, then saw your’s and Justen’s (AKA The Hannaman) P-40s and realized I probably should’ve waited a day or two to post pictures of mine. It’s like releasing a movie the same week that Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings comes out[;)]!
