Finished -- 72nd RF-4C

Hasegawa kit, stock except for some resin seats. Maybe what’s worth mentioning is what I didn’t do, and that is (contrary to current trends) put some dark wash in all the panel lines to “bring out the detail”. That to my eyes instantly would make a model like this “look like a model”, which exactly what I don’t want to do. Well yeah, there’s some behind the burner cans. Camo is all done freehand with my trusty Paasche H and Extracolor enamels.

72nd scale doesn’t seem very popular around here…

VERY Good Build for a small kit

Keep turning out models that look like that and 1/72 scale should gain in popularity. Beautiful. The camo looks great and is a fine example of proof that it is a function of the hand holding the AB and not the AB itself that make a great paint job. I could never have done that when I had my Paasche H.

very nice, hawxboss. The camo came out great.

Very nice work. The camo is outstanding for freehand, especially with the venerable Paasche H single action AB. Well done [tup].

Pat,

Just finished reading your “bio” in FSM, my hat is off to you! I wish I had the talent to turn modeling into supplemental income! As we are nearly the same age, I am especially envious of your abilities with 1:72 scale, I can’t even see the darned things, never mind detail them! This is an outstanding build of a venerable a/c, thankls for sharing with us all!

Thank-you, Brian…and everyone else. As for 72nd scale, it’s kind of what I grew up with. I still have a soft spot for those old Airfix, Revell, Frog and Hasegawa kits. And believe me, I couldn’t do them or anything else these days without significant vision enhancement. Sigh.

Pat,

Nice rendition of my favorite “phixed” wing aircraft. I’ve done 4 (in 1/72 scale) and have a big stash waiting for me. I am still partial to the smaller scale and also leave out the panel wash. As evidenced by your photos, recessed panel lines provide enough relief to be convincing in this scale. I use a very light preshade and variations of the base color to obtain a slightly used look on my models. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference, but I agree that the wash technique does have a contrived look about it. You got the juices flowing and I’m eyeballing a D in the stash right now, but first I need to finish the 1/72 B-25H and the 1/72 Hind A that are taking up all the bench space. I’ve got AMS with the Hind and wish I had never started it.The Mitchell is just getting new cowls and a few bits of PE added to what comes out of the Hasegawa box.

Phantoms Phorever!!!

Great looking build! I personally like 1/72 scale, somewhat cheaper on the budget, smaller for space considerations and they just look cool. Due to my extremely limited space available I will be getting back to building 1/72. I used to just build 1/48 just because I like big models and the detail possibilities are endless. Now I’m all about quality not quantity. Anyway, I’m rambling but again sweet build![tup]
