Greetings,
I’m ready to paint my .50 cal machine guns for a 1/72 PT Boat. I’m using Aires resin machine guns for this project. Does anyone have a favorite method for finishing small scale .50 cal machine guns?
Thank you
Dave

There are a couple methods. I have mixed up some silver and black paint to give me a good metallic black that I use. Then I drybrush with a steel color or rub a number 2 pencil along the edges. Another method is to paint it flat black then rub it down with graphite as well.
I just use a ModelMaster color called “Gunmetal”. It is a charcoal grey/anthracite colored paint with some metallic and graphite looking stuff in it, that dries to a semi-gloss.
Sometimes I also touch it up with a dry-brush of Testors “Steel”.

I use this “Gunmetal” as well. It covers well, too.
Remember, also, you do not want a dead-flat finish for a machine gun that has been in service, as all firearms get “shiney spots” on their finish from handling and use.

Greetings,
Last night I mixed up some very dark gray with Floquil Engine Black and some dark gray color I had laying around. It produced a very dark gray finish with just enough sheen. Then I rubbed off some no. 2 penicil graphine and rubbed it in a little this morning. It looks great!
I practiced with a 1/35 .50 cal gun. For the 1/72 piece I think I’m going to lighten up the gray just a little.
Looking at period photos it appears that the barrels after a lot of use were lighter than the main body of the gun. So I’m going to practice with that technique as well.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Dave
