Bish,
You’re in!
Guys,
I am looking for some help solving my dilemma: I know Tim has me down to do the D.VII, a fine aircrft I have no problem building. But I’m looking at my stash and there’s a Wingnut Wings S.E.5A in there calling to me, as it has been for about three years. I leave it up to the participants: Which one should I build?
Cheers, Aaron
Well, Aaron, seeing as how Tim is down for a D.VII, it would seem competitive instincts just gotta say SE-5!
OH, SURE! First, he raids my office for the Cylon Centurion from Moebius, then he changes his mind about the model he’s building … And now my 4-year-old son is in my home office with a bag over his head, informing me, “I am the Dark Power,” in a high-pitched falsetto.
Fine, Aaron. If you want to change your model, I don’t like it, but I’ll go along with it.
Now, I must go throw Mr. “Dark Power” in the bath tub so he’s clean for school.
OK, fellas, I’m going to have to insist that all Vickers and Spandau firing pins be checked at the door!
Don’t quite know what to suggest about the Dark Power thing, doesn’t really fit the genre…
They’re both great kits Aaron. I’ve built their SE.5 and am currently working on one of their D.VII’s. My question to you would be how comfortable are you with rigging? The D.VII ain’t got much, but the SE.5 has got a ton of it.
Bonjour gentlemen,
I say Monsieur Aaron should go with the SE.5 - can’t let the Central Powers get too much of an edge here oui?
I know next to nothing about WW1 aircraft, so what is the differance between the two DVII’s.
Ha! Can’t stop laughing.
I’m not sure there are significant differences, but the the D.VII was designed and built by Fokker, but Fokker’s factory couldn’t keep up with the numbers ordered, so the plane was also built under license by Albatros and its subsidiary OAW.
Right, so its the same as WW2 US aircraft having the letter of the factory that built it in the designation.
Thanks Tim.
I’m way too over-committed to other GB’s during that time frame, but I’d love to try a WWI aircraft if this were a longer GB.
Maybe you two staffers can have the 4-month competition betwixt yourselves and we citizens a more leisurely time frame?
Righto, Gamera! Can’t let the Kaiser’s chappies get too much of an upper hand, eh wot?
Hi Dre,
What I’ve done is snipped all the parts off the sprues for all of Aaron’s WWI airplane kits and mixed them together in a single box.
Actually, there’s no competition. We just wanted to build a couple of cool models and thought we’d offer to do it as a GB with interested members. However, we do want to keep this timeframe limited because Aaron and I have another group-build idea that we want to offer after this one; second, to keep people from overcommitting; and third, for us, managing one group build at a time is enough on top of all of our other responsibilities.
Hopefully, you can join us for the next GB we’ll start probably in September. I don’t want to give anything away as to its subject yet.
Tim
Cool, I’ll keep my eyes open for the next official FSM GB. Sorry to miss this, but I don’t see fitting in my first WWI aircraft inside a 4 month window on top of everything else going.
I’ll watch this GB to learn about the genre.
No kidding, Dre. I’m still wondering if I can do it.
On that note, after much soul searching (read as checking rigging diagrams), I have decided to stick with the D.VII (OAW).
Cheers, Aaron
Well here’s my offer of a badge. I thought it best to get it uploaded now, otherwise I’ll continue spending time tinkering with it. That is not to say though, if some have further suggestions, I will take into consideration to amend it.

I would be interested but there’s no chance I could build a model that quickly unless it was super simple.
Check out newer Revell Germany Dr.1. Not a lot of parts, but decent detail, good fits, and almost no rigging.[:D]
Cheers, Aaron
Hmmm…
The old 1/28 Revell model was a favorite of mine as a kid.
That little 1/72 looks sweet!
I can do that!
