Rob - Does the Polar Lights kit give any scale? I think it was a 16" tall model, right?

I’ve got a few Kaiju figures too, including Gammy of course and Gyaos. I figured the Trek models would be a lot easier to do and far more likely for me to finish in the time frame.
Alright Tim…jumping in feet first into a new realm of modeling for me! I would like to officially submit my request for entry to the GB with a ERTL/AMT 12" vinyl Star Trek figure of…Mr. Scott! He was always my favorite. Without him where would the Enterprise be!? Now remember, it’s my first figure kit, so no laughing until I start laughing at myself (which probably won’t take long!). [;)]

so went to the hobby store today and picked up Mobius’ spiderman.
Sweet! One of the things I like most about that kit is the clever way it hides the seams along the webbing on the costume. If I remember right, I had some issues with hiding the seams around the head and neck, but painting was able to hide the issues.

All right, so it looks like we have 15 inmates (including Aaron and me). That’s a good number.
To tell the truth, I’ve already started mapping out building Conan and gathering the materials I’ll need. I’ve also started going through colors and planning.
Which brings me to a problem–I have a bunch of treasure, coins mostly, dressing up the model. In the past, I’d paint it gold or whatever and call it done. But, on this one, I want to step it up a bit. I’m trying to come up with ways to detail the coins rather than have them be nondescript metal discs.
I know at this scale detail is going to be tough to see without an Optivisor, but I want that added texture, as minute as it might be.
I’ll continue to puzzle this one out and let you know what I come up with.
Now that I have no idea Tim, unless you want to paint each coin or print out tiny decals and apply them! I think I’d just paint them gold, add a dark gold wash and then drybrush the upper edges with a light gold.
I assume they’d have the face of a Hyborian (sp?) king or queen on them?
Hmmmm…intriguing problem. How about finding some cool medallion or two, mounting a handle to it, and using it as a branding iron to emboss detail into the coins?
Ooops…forgot to mention heating the branding iron, otherwise it would brand very well [:$]
I guess it depends on how many you need. They’ll be pretty good sized, 8mm or so would be 2" which seems about right. There’s lots to look at in beading, including strings of tiny coins you can take apart.
You only need the top layer to look good.
Joanne’s or Claires are always good resources. Something to do while Ms. Kidwell is at the mall.
hmm, I like the idea of finding miniature coins - nothing wrong with a mixed media approach. It will entail some work to carve off those that are already on the base, unless you just place new ones on top.
GMorrison is right in adding that only the top coins need to be fully detailed. This is something the old masters did to great effect with their canvas paintings.
Decals is another great option, again just the upper most coins need to be thoroughly detailed. I would forgo using a straight metallic paint, and rely on maybe 4 to 5 shades to give the illusion of gold colour. So for instance paint overall a mid-light brown, add a dark wash, and use decals (clear type) with two darker tones for detail. Then go back in with a fine brush to add highlights.

I had mulled the idea of decals, and still might take that approach. As for the metallic paint–you’re absolutely right, Jack. I’d definitely go with the non-metallic metal approach.

So I am coming home… turn onto my street and a I get close enough to my house, but still a ways to go, I see the box. Leaning against the door petty as you please. I immediately turned on my “Terminator” robotic eyes and all those little flashing graphs and measurement instruments start blinking on and off, highlighting adjacent objects for scale, and there is a whirring sound in my hear as microchips start to analyze the data. Suddenly a klaxon sounds in my head and across the bottom of my field of view in red digitized letters are flashing…

Just got home from Hols and my Darth Vader was waiting for me, and boy are these things big. Tim, if you can just put it down as a 1/4 Darth Vader. I have a funny feeling the seller has made copies of the Screamin kit. It didn’t come in a box or with any paper work and the cape, which I believe should be rubber, is the same vinyl as the rest. And though the pose looks exactly the same, the feet are closer together, which means its going to need some adjustment to stand properly. So I think calling it a Screamin kit might be going a bit to far.
