FineScale Modeler Heroes & Villains Group Build 2014

Hello everyone!

Aaron and I are huge fans of fantasy and science fiction. What’s more, figure models are something that we both enjoy building and finishing, and we’re keen to explore some new techniques, so why not have you guys come along with us for the ride?

Here are the ground rules:

First, the model must be a figure and it must be recognizable as a fantasy or science-fiction hero or villain from TV, movies, or comic books. A figure of Gen. George S. Patton would not fit this group build. A figure of Iron Man would.

Second, the figures must be 1/16 scale (120mm) or larger for a human, humanoid robot, droid, or other creature. Though they are models and cool, gaming miniatures and busts will not be allowed.

Third, no semi-factory-finished or pre-finished models or toys. These have to be model figures you build and finish.

Lastly, nothing raunchy, hyper-sexual, uber-violent or gory, and absolutely no nudes. Basically, if you have to ask yourself, “Would this be OK?”, it’s probably not. However, if you have a question about the suitability of a particular model, send Aaron or me a personal message.

If we can get six of you interested in the build, I’ll get a badge made and make the launch official. There are a lot of great kits out there now from a bunch of different companies, not to mention the older kits floating around in your stashes, so we shouldn’t be hurting for subjects.

The group build will start on Oct. 1, 2013, and finish on March 31, 2014. Keeping the build compressed makes sure Aaron and I keep working, otherwise, we’re likely to wait until the last two weeks to try to finish something. (See the World War I Aeroplane Group Build.)

To get things rolling, I’ll build the Moebius Models 1/6 scale Conan the Barbarian: Death on the Black Coast resin model, and Aaron will enter with Halcyon’s 1/6 scale Judge Dredd vinyl offering he scooped out of the Way-Back Machine.

The deadline for signing up for the group build is Dec. 31, 2013.

There are two options for the group build badge:

or

cancel that. I just realised what I was going to enter is to small.

Tim: Now this is something since it’s mostly brush painting I should be able to finish in the listed deadline! I’ve got a pile of 28, 32, 54, and 90mm gaming figures but I do have a few 1/6th scale vinyl ones too. Mostly they’re the AMT original Trek figures and some Geometric Designs Next Generation ones. I’m assuming these would be ok? I may have some more I’ll have to root around the stash.

Gamera - Those AMT and Geometric Designs figs would be just fine.

Bish - What scale is it? If you can come up with a larger fig, we’d love to have you on board.

The ones I have are all 70mm. I have been thinking about getting a Star Wars vinyl figure similar to what gamera mentioned. If I get one in time, I will be in.

Would a Storm trooper be ok, if not, I will get the Darth Vader figure. I want both anyway.

Bish - I think Vader better fits the spirit of the build than the stormtrooper. You got a couple of months to get him.

Gamera - When you decide on which character you want to model, let me know and I’ll add it to the list.

Ye, that’s what I thought. I can’t find the trooper on E-bay now anyway. I’ll get back to you when I get it.

Tim: Well since the title is Heroes AND Villains if you would please put me down with both Geometric Design’s 1/6th Captain Jon-Luc Picard and their Romulan officer.

Bish: I think it was Geometric did an awesome Han Solo figure, probably would cost you an arm and a leg these days but it was a dead ringer for Harrison Ford.

Well, it sounded better than Heroes OR Villains. Anyway, you got it!

Have a great weekend!

Tim

Thanks Gamera, i’ll see if I can find one. The ones I am looking at are from Screamin, I think. The e-bay site don’t say, but it looks like theirs.

Thanks Tim!

Bish: Now that you mention it, I think the Solo figure was from Screamin’ too.

Tim, you can absolutely count me in on this one! I have a resin kit of the Predator that I’d love to enter. It was purchased online by me from a shop in the UK over a decade ago and is no longer in its original box, so I’m unsure at this moment of the manufacturer or the scale, but I’ll do a little digging and see if I can come up with more info.

edit - found this old image in my photobucket account…

Doesn’t give me the scale or the manufacturer, but my guess on the scale would be about 1/10 to 1/12 scale. Posed as is, the kit measures 7 1/2" high.

Wow, you guys are showing a fiendish proclivity for ego-busting choices for the GBs!

Haven’t done figures for about 20 years, but, hey…public humiliation is nothing new to me. I’m in—going old school—with the grandaddy of hero figures, the ex-Aurora 1/8 (I think) Son of Krypton…Superman. (Actually, I think it’s the Revell “Retro Classics” re-release.)

I look forward to being schooled (in every sense of that expression) by you figure guys.

I’m in-not sure with what yet-have to check and see what my LHS has in stock.

I thought what the hell, and went and ordered the Darth figure today. I think its from Screamin, but will confirm when it arrives.

Greg, that’s makes two of us. I have only done 35tyh and 72nd figures for diorama’s. This will be my first stand alone figure.

I’ll put you down! Is a Dark Horse model? 1/6 scale perhaps?

Bish - We’ll get the details for the model when it arrives. Glad to have you aboard!

Bobbaily - Looking forward to your choice! Welcome!

Greg - We said we’re trying to go in different directions with these group builds, both to challenge ourselves and to try to mix things up a little. I hope we’re succeeding.

We have a number of figure modelers on the Forum, so hopefully a few of them will jump on. Also, I’m excited to see you guys who aren’t figure modelers per se giving this a shot. That is AWESOME!

Things like this are a good chance to try something new and pick up tips from those with a bit of experience. I have been planning on getting a few of these kits for a while, so this is the perfect excuse.

OK, guys…I’ll admit you were right. This is about as far out of my “modeling norm” as you could get. Having said that, the WW1 Group was great. So…put me down (especially after you see my attempts at figure painting! HAH!).

I assume a 1:12 Atlantis Model Zorro will allow me to embarrass myself among my peers? If so log me in…thank you. I think.

But hey, how hard can it be? A guy in a black cape and black mask, riding a black horse. Yeah, right…

Chuck

That was my thinking. Minus the horse.
