I have had problems with grainey final coats in the past (flat acryls). What’s a good way to smooth out the rough areas prior to clear coat? Wet sanding? Some kind of rub?

It sounds like you are having trouble with the spray application, frankly—flat acrylics should not be noticeably grainy on the surface when properly applied.

That being said, you can wet sand with fine grits—1000 and higher. I’d start with 1200. There are special polishing kits available, too, but these are usually used to polish gloss finishes.
