This conversation is directed at a model or models you built in the last year or so that was so easy and pleasurable to build that someone else might be interested in doing.
You know that kit you wish every kit was like. I was working on the Dumas 41’ Utility Boat last year which was going together pretty easily until it had to take a backseat to the Tamiya 1/35 scale Stuart M3 Light Tank/ Early Production which has been a dream. No lost parts, everything fit together great, painted well, until the decals. I’ve messed with them so much because they won’t lay down on curves. Nothing worked. So of course they broke.
So, I was thinking about asking you guys what you think. Do you have a favorite?
Any subject qualifies…
Andy’s Hobby 1/16 Early Tiger, went together real nice,no hitches being larger really helped.
1/350 IJN Seaplane Cruiser, hadn’t done a ship in a long time and this one was a dream, typical Tamiya assembly with no issues.
Not real recent but I will throw out these:
Tamiya F-14
Tamiya P-38
Meng T-90
Not a recent build either, but Imai’s Mole from the Gerry Anderson TV show Thunderbirds was one of the few kits I have built as an adult where I felt there was no need for any modifications.
Bandai’s HGUC MSM-04 Acguy is a super ugly design that is an awesome kit. Engineering and fit are perfect, and despite its bizarre looks, it does everything it is supposed to.
Older Tamiya armor kits are enjoyable builds when done OOTB or with minor upgrades.
I typically build aircraft and cars/bikes but once in a while something catches my eye. Last year my favorite was the 1/32 Bandai T-Rex. Goes together great and really fun to decide on the finish.
Well, I’m working on a Tamiya Panzer 38(t) 1/35, which has been a pleasure to build so far. But then that’s usual Tamiya quality.
One kit that I found to be easy and quick to build is the Hasegawa 1/72 scale Grumman X-29 aircraft. There were so few parts and they went together pretty smoothly that I hardly needed any puttying or sanding. Of course, I built mine as a Japanese fighter aircraft.
Glad to hear that. Just ordered one for my X plane collection.
The X-29 kit doesn’t come with missiles. Those were spare parts I added to my model.
I’ve been working on some classic Aurora model kits for a group build on you tube. They sure don’t stack up to today’s kits BUT they sure do bring back a lot of good modeling memories and smiles. It’s nice now and then to put together a low stress kit for the pure pleasure of building for yourself.
I just finished the Tamiya 1/72 Hien and it fell together like a dream. Perfect project to decompress with over a weekend.
The new Tamiya H39 was a real pleasure to build…best one this year.
This is so cool! It’s like the shinden ii & f-5 had a baby. Did you handpaint the camo on?
Yeah, I hand painted the camo. It’s not perfect as I’ve got bad eyesight. The edges of the darker blue are a bit rough.
If there’s another model that is so easy and pleasurable to build, then I’d have to go back a few years and say it was the BANDAI 1/500 scale Space Battleship Yamato from the rebooted tv series Star Blazers 2199 from 2012-2013. As soon as I saw this kit hit the market, I knew I had to have one. This is one of the best, if not THE BEST, SBY kit around. The parts fit was so great that I hardly needed any glue. I even bought a separate interior hangar expansion set with extra fighters to put inside the Yamato. Of course, being a what if modeler, I did change the model slightly and add a few extra smaller anti-fighter laser turrets on the ship. My biggest regret: I missed buying the DVD series. But I did check it out from a local library and watched it. It’s really good!
That battleship reminds me of a anime cartoon from the 1980’s. I wonder if it’s the same. I can’t remember much anymore about it but they had a flying ship. My younger brothers really dug it but I was a little older.
Space Battleship Yamato! Loved that show.
What a cool and interesting kit!! Looks great… nicely done Sir
For me, a recent build that was a pleasant surprise was the FlyHawk SBD-3 Dauntless in 1/72. I think this is their only aircraft kit - and they really should do more, it was fantastic. Great details, excellent fit. Highly recommended.
Love the Dauntless…that’s a great looking build!
Very well done @Chuckd.
