Falklands War model ship choices...

I know Dragon/DML have put out the British type 21 and type 42 Frigate and Destroyer, as well as a couple of Aircraft Carriers (Invincible and Hermes?)…

A couple of questions:

  1. Anyone have any experience w/ any of these kits? Good, bad ugly?

  2. Are there any more models of ships that participated in the war, prefer in 700th scale…???

Actually Eric Illustrious was the other carrier put out by Dragon but also the Destroyer HMS Sheffield was also released recently as well. Most of the Argentinian Naval vessels were ex-US Navy vessels so you can try to research those.

I wonder if there are any models of the Brit’s supporting ships, like the Sir Galahad…??? The World Wonders…

Seems to me there is a Falklands GB in here somewhere…

We were slim on the ships though, not sure of the naval options.

A hot-link would be nice…

I’m now officially a BIG Falklands War Groupie…

From what I’ve been hearing the Dragon Type 21 is over scale. I haven’t personally tried to verify it as I don’t have a kit…

Here’s a list from another forum. It may be out of date but gives an idea of what to look for.

All in 1/700:

WEM - Type 22 batch 1 “Broadsword/Brilliant”

L`arsenal - HMS Fearless

NNT - Atlantic Conveyor

skytrex -Glamorgan/Antrim County class destroyer

hi-mold -Glamorgan/Antrim County class destroyer

MT miniature -Leander class frigate

-HMS Bristol Destroyer

Atlantics -hunt class minesweeper

Dragon - HMS Invincible

  • HMS Sheffield

  • HMS Amazon class (coming soon)

Orange Hobby-HMS Hermes 1982 (and 1968 variant coming soon)

I’ve not heard of a Galahad or Tristram.

There is a review of Dragon’s type 21 over at one of the other sites, the summary being “a big thumbs down” due to the 1/600 hull and 1/700 fittings.

I also think Dragon messed up the split at the waterline. The split is definitely much higher at the bow and possibly lower at the stern than it should be. It gives the kit a definite “down by the bow” appearance. If you look at the keel of the model, it is not parallel to the waterline.

I would try to give them the benefit of the doubt by suggesting it is meant to represent the ship “as sinking”, but she was settling by the stern then sank bow and stern up after breaking her back. It’s not Dragon’s finest hour.

I’m sure you can knock something up in time.

I would love to get ahold of a kit of the Sir Galahad—the most interesting ship of the lot, IMO…

Yeah, wish there was a kit of the Sir Galahad…just sayin’…

Mr. Manstein, there is not. It’s hard to find fleet auxiliaries in any service, any era. They just are not popular.

If one was truly inspired, there are drawings available of the Round Table Class, and there have been at least two classes with that name.

Wish I could buy those plans…

If you can stand 1/600 scale, Airfix have ancient kits of the Leander and Amazon (Type 21) frigates in styrene.

Still looking for those Sir Galahad plans…
