F4U-1 "Birdcage" Corsair (1:72 Tamiya)

Finished up this sweet little kit, started on Saturday morning at the IPMS Three Rivers/Pittsburgh “Modeling Retreat” that we have once or twice a year. A bunch of us get together and just build all day, and B.S. Great fun! This model replicates the machine of LT. J. Walsh, VMF-124. I know, the Marines were land-based…but the flight deck looks better than plain white background, if you ask me! I used Vallejo Model Air acrylics, and light weathering was acheived with oils. Enjoy…

WOW!!![:O] That looks killer!! I like that color, nice departure from the standard dark blue versions! Great job on such a small scale!

Hey!
That looks pretty good, mate!
I’m gonna go out and get one of those for myself…everyone says it’s a fantastic build.
Thanks for the pics.

Thanks a million, blunce and leemitchell! The kit’s just great! I’ve built the original kit (non-birdcage) and this is essentially the same, but for some new tooled parts. I have another original Corsair on the shelf, and this build makes me want to start it!!!

Cheers,

JK

That’s a beautiful job on the Corsair. By the way, do you use Vallejo paints often? I’ve not tried them yet and wondering how they differ from the other acrylics out there (Tamiya, MM Acryl, Gunze, etc.) Can you share your thoughts on them?

Sweet little build

Thad

Very nicely done. I picked one up last week, looks like a sweet kit.

Great looking build.

Nicely understated weathering.

Thanks one and all! Mucker, the Vallejo acrylics (Model Air) are awesome! I especially like the dropper-tipped bottles. The Vallejo website recommends using their thinner, or Windex or distilled water. I rarely thin it with anything at all, and use Isopropyl alchohol when I do. I order mine from Srue Brothers. Try them, I think you’ll enjoy them.

Cheers,

JK

Thanks, JK. I love the dropper bottle idea. I’m stuck on Color of Eagles acrylics, but they are limited in their offerings. I noticed Vallejo has a wide range. I use the CoE paints much like you do the Vallejo, so I will defniately give them a try. Thanks for the good info.
