Several years ago, there was a poster of a B-17 and and F-18 cruising side-by-side with the caption, “Old age and experience beats youth and skill every time.” The F-18 had its nose pitched up about 20 degrees, and you could almost imagine that Fort’s tounge hanging out. I still regret not getting a copy.

Is it my imagination, or does the pic look a bit “faked”, or at the very least touched up? The cockpit of the F-22 looks odd, and the tail of the Mustang on the other pic seems to overlap the F-22 in a very odd way. The shadows on the planes seem at odds with eachother too in places… or have I finally tipped over the brink into conspiracy theory land? [;)]
I’m wondering if the F-22 has evolved into the F-15XX.
The F-15XX was a “low cost” alternative to the Advanced Tactical Fighter flyoff, and was basically just a “stealthy” F-15. With the redesign of the F-22 after the ATF flyoff, the thing looks more and more like an F-15 every time I look at it!
Although we can finally say it IS a pretty airplane! That prototype was hideous!

Hi all,
I’m not sure about whether the image is a fake, but there is something about it that suggests it might be a lash-up. I compared it at once to a classic photo of a Mustang flying with a pair of F-16s taken long ago, and the old photo is clearly the real thing, while the new one feels a bit off.
As for which plane looks the best, I take a lot of convincing that anything ever looked better than a P-51D in flight (unless it’s a Spitfire), but then I’m totally biased!

Great photos, thanks for posting the link. I got to see a similar site at a 4 July arishow near my parents farm a couple years ago. It was a Mustang and A-10 flying side-by-side. Right before that the Mustang participated in a staged dogfight with a Zero.
Cool. Does this mean I might finally get to see a Raptor at an airshow this year?
